해방 후 북한은 공직자 개개인들로부터 자서전과 이력서를 수합하였다. 그들의 가족관계와 활동 경력을 기록한 이 문건들은 국가가 개개인들을 장악하고 관리할 수 있는 자료로 활용되었다. 자서전·이력서류는 당시 일반 대중들의 기록이라는 점에서 독특한 사료적 가치를 지닌다. 그러나 당국에 제출된 문건이라는 자료의 성격 상, 자서전과 이력서류는 기록자들의 자기검열을 수반할 수밖에 없다. 당국으로부터 받을 불이익을 의식한 기록자들은 가능한 한 부정한 전력을 은폐하려 한 반면, 유리한 경력을 부각하는 식의 글쓰기를 시도하였다. 사실 자서전·이력서는 자신의 이해관계를 관철함과 아울러 불이익을 피하고자 했던 일반 대중들의 전략적 글쓰기가 적극적으로 시도된 공간이었다. 물론 북한 당국은 일반 대중들의 전략적 글쓰기를 방관하지 않았다. 당국자들은 개개인들을 철저히 해부해 그들의 속임수를 간파해내는 대응 전략으로 맞섰다. 자서전·이력서는 북한 대중들과 당국 간의 갈등이 표면화된 공간이자, 양자가 “글쓰기”라는 매개를 통해 서로 대립한 “치열한 격전장”의 성격을 띠었다.

After the liberation, North Korea collected autobiographies and resumes from the public officials. These documents recording their family relationships and career histories were used as resources which state could control and manage individuals. The autobiographies and the resumes are unique in that they are records of the general public at the time. However due to the nature of the materials that are submitted to the authorities, autobiographies and resumes must pass the self-censorship of the recorders. While recorders who were conscious of disadvantages by the authorities attempted to conceal their unjust careers, emphasized their advantageous careers. In short autobiography and resume was a space which strategic writing by the general public desiring to pursue his own interests and avoid disadvantages actively attempted. Of course North Korean authorities did not tolerate strategic writing by the general public. The authorities confronted as a strategy to dissect all of individuals and detect their deceptions. Autobiography and resume were a space where conflict between the North Korean public and the authorities surfaced, and a “fierce battleground” where both opposed each other through the medium of writing.
