본고의 목적은 2018년 한 해 동안 태국의 정치, 경제, 외교, 한국과의 관계에서 나타난 주요 특징과 동향을 살펴보고, 향후 전망을 제시하는 것이다. 2018년 태국은 각 정당의 당대표 선출 및 신당 창당 등 본격적인 선거전 돌입을 위한 준비가 이루어진 한 해였다. 2018년 태국정치의 가장 중요한 쟁점이 된 것은 민정이양을 위한 총선일정이었다. 2017년 헌법으로는 사실상 ‘완전한’ 민정이양이 불가능한 상태임에도 불구하고, 군사정권은 여러 차례 총선시기를 연기했다. 총선 후에도 지금과 같은 군부의 체제유지가 보장되는, 즉 ‘불완전한’ 민간정부의 탄생이 가능한지에 대한 확신이 필요했다. 태국정부가 총선 실시를 약속하면서 미국과 EU와의 정치적 관계도 개선이 이루어졌다. 한편 2018년 태국경제는 최근 6년간 가장 높은 성장률을 보이며, 전년에 이어 성장세를 이어갔다. 현 군사정부가 집권초기에 내놓은 EEC경제개발계획도 진척을 보인 한 해였다. 특히 동 계획의 인프라 개발에 있어서 중국과의 경제적 협력은 더욱 밀접해졌다. 총선 후 안정적인 민정이양 여부와 새 정부의 정책방향이 대외관계 및 태국경제에 직·간접적으로 영향을 미칠 것으로 예상되는데, 그 향방에 귀추가 주목된다.

The purposes of this study are to examine the major characteristics and trends of Thailand in politics, economy, diplomacy, and relations with South Korea in 2018 and propose its future prospects. In 2018, Thailand made preparations for all-out election campaign fights with each of the parties electing their head and a new party being formed. The most important issue in the country's politics in 2018 was the general election schedule to transfer power to civil government. In 2017, the military regime of Thailand postponed a general election several times even though it was impossible to transfer power to civil government “fully” based on the Constitution. They needed confidence that an “incomplete” civil government to ensure the maintenance of the current military system, would be possible even after a general election. As the Thai government promised to hold a general election, the country's political relations with the U.S.A. and EU improved. In 2018, the nation's economy recorded the highest growth rate in recent six years, continuing to grow after the previous year. It seemed that the EEC economic development plan proposed by the current military government in the early days of its rule made progress in 2018. In infrastructure development under the plan, in particular, the nation's economic collaboration with China became even closer. After a general election, the diplomatic relations and economy of Thailand will be under the direct and indirect influence of stable transfer of power to civil government, if possible, and policy directions of the new government. There is much attention to its future course.
