현지조사를 통해 특정 국가나 지역의 맥락을 깊이 있게 이해함으로써 관심 사안에 대한 답을 구하는 단일사례연구가 전통적인 지역연구의 방법이라 할 수 있다. 본 논문은 아직 민주주의로의 전환을 경험하지 않은 싱가포르를 사례로 비교연구 방법을 활용하는 지역연구의 예를 제시한다. 지역연구에서 비교연구 방법을 활용하면 단일 사례로부터 관찰한 연구 질문의 중요성을 높이고, 주장의 타당성을 높이며, 사회과학 이론 발전에도 기여할 수 있다.

A conventional research method in regional studies is the single-case study that typically requires field research for a deep understanding of the context of a country or a region. In this article I investigate why Singapore has not democratized as an example of regional studies using comparative methods. Such regional studies can raise the importance of research questions deriving from single-case studies, increase the validity of arguments, and contribute to the development of theories in social sciences.
