상징은 보완·대체의사소통체계의 핵심적인 구성요소이며, 특히 인지장애를 가진 발달장애 학생들을 위한 보완·대체의사소통체계에 사용되는 상징의 경우에는 학습하기 쉽도록 구성하여야 한다. 그동안 국내에서 개발된 AAC 도구들은 주로 그림상징을 상징체계로 사용하고 있으나, AAC 사용자의 관점에서 그림상징의 도상성에 대해 구체적으로 밝힌 연구는 많지 않은 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 그동안 국내에서 개발된 그림상징의 특성과 그림상징의 도상성에 대한 연구를 살펴봄으로써 향후 AAC 사용자의 관점과 촉진자의 입장에서 사용과 교수가 용이한 타당성 있는 상징체계 개발의 기초자료를 마련하고자 하였다. 연구결과, 그림상징의 도상성은 연령, 어휘의 품사별, 동작성 여부, 사용되는 AAC 도구, 장애유형별 고려해야 할 요소가 많은 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구목적과 연구결과에 따라 향후 국내 실정에 적합한 AAC 상징체계 개발에 필요한 제언과 후속연구의 방향성을 제안하였다.

Graphic symbols are the core component of augmentative and alternative communication(AAC) system, which should be developed to acquire easily for the people with severe intelligent disabilities. All the while, the AAC devices developed in the nation used the graphic symbols mostly often, however, there are a few studies on the standards of the iconicity of graphic symbols from the consumer’s perspective. As investigating the researches conducted on the iconicity of graphic symbols and the graphic symbol systems, the valid graphic symbols within the framework of the AAC user and the facilitators will develop in the future. In the AAC graphic symbols, the visual features were similar between multiple disparate tools. And then the iconicity of graphic symbols was influenced by the ages, the part of speech, the animated features, AAC devices, the type of disabilities of the AAC users. The results of this study mat make sense to suggest the commend for the appropriate graphic symbols.
