In folk song studies, the dichotomy separating folk songs from lyric poetry and narrative folk songs is well-established. In this divide, the term “narrative” is usually recognized as referring to a story. However, in Joeson Minyoseon and Joseon Minyojipseong, the term “narrative” has a different meaning from the one typically found in the existing academic discourse. In Joeson Minyoseon and Joseon Minyojipseong, the term “narrative” has a common meaning, describing things and events. Thus, this term also refers to folk songs which may seem irrelevant to stories. Therefore, even folk songs that seem incompatible with the standard meaning of “narrative” (used to describe a plot) may correspond to “describing material” that expresses things. They are also referred to in “narrative” terms.
