본 논문은 19-20세기에 창작 및 향유되었던 것으로 추정되는 「양씨전」 속 등장인물의 형상과 그 의미를 고찰해 보는 데 목적이 있다. 「양씨전」은 양씨가 남씨 집안에 며느리로서 자리매김 하는 과정이 담긴 소설이다. 양씨는 혼인을 계기로 시댁에 새로운 가족으로 편입하고자 하는 데 있어서 적극성을 띠는 여성이다. 그녀는 스스로 남편에 대해 열을 다하고, 시어머니에 대한 효를 행함으로써 시댁에 귀속되고자 노력한다. 작품 속 주변인물로 등장하는 양처사와 서해 용왕은 이러한 양씨가 시댁에 온전히 자리매김할 수 있도록 도와주는 인물들이다. 이들은 단순히 주인공을 돕는 역할을 넘어 양씨가 며느리로서의 삶을 영위할 수 있게 하는 데 결정적인 역할을 한다. 이와 같은 작업을 통해서 양씨가 시댁을 위해 망설임 없는 희생을 하는 것은 조선 후기 여성이 시댁 귀속을 위한 이상적인 방안을 제시한다는 데서 의미를 찾을 수 있다. 또한 조력자들이 딸의 존재를 며느리로 만드는 것은 효열 의식을 전면화시킴으로써 작품의 교훈성을 부각시킨다는 것을 알 수 있다. 따라서 「양씨전」 속 양씨가 시댁에 귀속하는 과정은 양씨와 그 주변 조력자들을 통해 볼 때, 며느리가 시댁을 위해 효열부로 거듭나야 하는 당위성을 보여주는 보수적인 시각이 반영된 것을 보여주는 것임을 알 수 있다.

The purpose of this study was to examine the aspects and meaning of Mrs. Yang’s belonging to her husband’s family in a novel “Yangssi- Jeon.” Mrs. Yang is the heroine of the novel who makes a great contribution to the prosperity of the Nams into which she marries. As for the aspects of Mrs. Yang’s belonging to her family-in-law, she is active in being assimilated into the new family through marriage. She tries to become a member of the family by doing everything she can do for her husband and by tending her mother-in-law with filial piety. Yang Cheo-sa and the dragon king of the western sea who are the characters of the novel help her to become a genuine member of the family. They are not mere helper but play decisive roles in helping her lead a good life as a daughter-in-law. Based on the aspects of Mrs. Yang’s belonging to her husband’s family, the meaning of it could be described as follows: First, the woman herself seeks after more solidarity with her family-in-law. The novel shows that the daughter-in-law faces up to her reality and that she makes an effort to become a real family member. Next, the novel also shows the conservative view of contemporary androcentric society. Namely, the helpers assist the heroine, but as a matter of fact, their assistance is just for the sake of the Nams, not for the heroine herself. Given the behaviors of Mrs. Yang and her helpers in the novel, the process that Mrs. Yang is assimilated into her in-laws reflects the contemporary conservative perspective that daughter-in-laws should unilaterally dedicate themselves to families-in-law, and that they should contribute to the prosperity of the families.
