본 연구에서는 수퍼바이저의 피드백에 대한 상담 수련생의 인식과 경험을 탐색하였다. 구체적으로는 도움이 되었거나 되지 않았던 수퍼바이저 피드백의 특성을 파악하고, 피드백 수용을 촉진하거나 저해하는 요인을 확인하였다. 이를 위해 상담전공 석사과정 3학기 이상의 상담 수련생 9명을 대상으로 반구조화(semi-structured)된 개별 인터뷰를 진행하였고, 합의적 질적 연구 방법을 사용하여 자료를 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 최종적으로 4개의 영역과 17개의 범주가 도출되었다. 참여자들은 수퍼바이저의 피드백이 사례개념화, 자기성장, 개입 방법이나 기술 등과 관련된 학습을 촉진시킬 때 도움이 된다고 지각한 데 반해, 상담 과정에 즉각적으로 적용하기 어렵거나 구체적이지 않은 피드백은 도움이 되지 않는다고 지각하는 것으로 확인되었다. 또한 참여자들은 수퍼바이저가 수용적이고 지지적인 태도를 보이거나 긍정적이고 인간적인 특성을 보일 때에는 피드백을 쉽게 수용하는 반면, 지나치게 비판적이거나 비난하는 태도를 보이거나 상담자로서 자신이 의도하거나 노력했던 부분들을 무시하거나 부정할 때 피드백 수용에 방어적인 것으로 나타났다. 연구결과를 바탕으로 상담 수퍼비전에 대한 시사점과 향후 연구에 대한 제언을 논하였다.

This study qualitatively examined counselor trainees’ perceptions and experience of supervisor feedback. Specifically, the characteristics of helpful or unhelpful supervisor feedback and the factors that would facilitate or impede feedback acceptance were identified. Nine counseling trainees, who had stayed in the master’s level graduate program for at least three semesters, were individually interviewed in a semi-structured format and data were analyzed using the Consensual Qualitative Research. The analysis finally yielded four domains and 17 categories. Participants found feedback helpful when it facilitated their better understanding of case conceptualization, self growth, and particular interventions, while feedback unhelpful when it was not immediately applicable or unclear. In addition, they were receptive to feedback if the supervisor was warm and supportive or his or her personal characteristics were positive. In contrast, participants were defensive if the supervisor took an overly critical and blaming attitude toward their performance or invalidated their therapeutic intention and efforts. Based on the findings of this study, implications for counseling supervision and future research were discussed.
