김려(金鑢, 1766~1821)가 경남 창원시 마산에 유배 와서 쓴 『우해이어보(牛海異魚譜)』 (1803년)는 우리나라 최초의 어보(魚譜)이다. 여기에는 조선후기 마산의 어촌 생활상과 해양문화적 특성이 담겨 있다. 이에 글쓴이는 김려의 유배살이와 그의 저술 『우해이어보』를 바탕으로 조선후기 마산의 해양문화에 대해 짚어보고자 했다. 특히 유배지 마산의 장소성과 더불어 문화 정체성, 이를테면 어로 행위와 생활환경을 통한 해양문화의 전통과 자산에 대해 살펴보았다. 첫째, 『우해이어보』에 나타난 어패류의 명칭은 지역의 정서적 의미와 함께 문화적 의미가 각별하다고 하겠다. 지역 언어를 모른 채 문화 현상을 파악할 수 없듯이, 어패류에 대한 별칭은 특정 지역의 변별적 생활 경험을 보여준다고 하겠다. 둘째, 김려는 조선후기 마산지역 어업활동의 중요한 요소인 어구와 어획법을 소개하고 있다. 이를테면 낚시, 반두, 쇠작살 등의 어구뿐 아니라 통발과 방렴을 활용한 어획 방법이 대해 상세히 서술하고 있다. 이 또한 마산지역의 어로행위를 이해하는데 중요한 자료를 제공해 주고 있다. 셋째, 김려의 『우해이어보』에서는 어패류의 음식 가공과 유통과정에 대해서도 남다른 관심을 보여주고 있다. 이를 통해 당시 마산지역 어촌의 생활환경을 이해할 수 있을 것이다. 또한 김려는 수산물 유통과 교역 대상지역을 언급하고 있다. 이로 미루어 조선후기 마산의 수산물의 유통과 교역 현황까지 파악할 수 있다. 넷째, 김려는 『우해이어보』를 통해 마산지역 어촌의 당시 생활상과 민속을 소개하고 있다. 특히, 여러 문화현상 가운데 어촌 여성들의 몸치장, 제철에 장만한 초청 음식과 차례상 음식, 독특한 건축물 등의 생활상, 아울러 어민들의 독특한 풍속을 언급하고 있다. 이를 통해 조선후기 마산의 어촌 생활상은 물론 해양문화의 특징을 이해 할 수 있을 것이다.

Woohaerieobo written by Kim Ryo in Masan is Korea's first fish-genealogy. It contains the living and marine cultural characteristics of Masan in the late Chosun Dynasty. Based on Kim Ryo's exile and his writings, the writer wanted to carefully examine the marine culture of Masan in the late Chosun Dynasty. In particular, we approached the cultural identity, such as the marine culture tradition and assets through the living environment, along with the location of the exile site Masan. First, the name of the fishes in Woohaerieobo is unique in terms of regional emotional meaning and cultural significance of the Just as we cannot grasp the cultural phenomena without knowing the local language, the nickname for fish and shell represents the distinct life experience of a certain area. Second, Kim Ryo introduces fishing gear and fishing methods, which are important factors in fishing activities in Masan in the late Chosun period. For example, fishing, bandwagon, and iron harrow are described in detail, as well as fishing methods that utilize gongbal and rust. It also provides important data for understanding fish behavior in Masan. Third, Kim Ryo's Woohaerieobo is also showing special interest in the processing and distribution of fish and shell. This will help us understand the living conditions of the fishing villages in Masan at that time. It also refers to areas subject to distribution and trade activity of marine products. Based on this, the current status of distribution and trade of marine products in Masan in the late Chosun Dynasty can be determined. Fourth, Kim Ryo introduces the lifestyle and folklore of a fishing village in Masan area through the Woohaerieobo. Among many cultural phenomena, the restaurant refers to the unique customs of fishermen as well as the daily lives of women in fishing villages, invited food and memorial services, and unique buildings during the season. This will help us understand the characteristics of marine culture as well as the life of fishing villages in Masan in the late Chosun Dynasty.
