In order to think about contemporary media environment, it is necessary to pay attention to the phenomenon of Individualization. As the number of zero-TV households increases, the search for film has increased sharply with computer, tablet PC, and smart phone. They rarely use traditional TV sets. At this point, YouTube, SNS and Streaming site as Netflix, Youcast, etc. have become the most popular platforms. Nowadays, individuals do not only stay on watching and appreciation but also do easily a creation.
The traditional screen interface, represented by movies, is of course easily found and ubiquitous everywhere. In parallel, we can find coexistence of an image interface that can be clicked and operated. The use of digital devices has become so common that we call our daily lives as Screen Life.
Searching, which was released in 2018, is a post-filmic movie that dissolves the above-mentioned contemporary media environment in composition and directing. Because the various types of screen interfaces are key elements of narrative. In Searching, much more work was done in the post-production process than on-site footage. The field shot is just a data source. The full use of GoPro also reflects the changing media environment. In view of the history of optical machinery, the emergence of GoPro is a decisive momentum that allows video recording to be relatively free, place-independent, and longtime filmage.
Through Searching, we can also distinguish characteristics of screen interfaces that are important in our daily life. In this paper, we observe two types of screen interfaces. The characteristics of both types are defined by the absence and presence of physical interaction, transparency and opacity, depth and surface.
This article is based on Roland Barthes’ concept of Noema to illustrate traditional forms of photography and movies as the medium of Ça a ete (Was there). On the other hand, the streaming video that has recently been highlighted is described as a media of Being here. This article aims also to think about how we can define the Individualized Visual Culture.
