본 연구는 대규모의 말뭉치를 바탕으로 초등학교 교과서의 순화 대상어 선정 작업을 소개하였다. 이는 국어 순화 운동의 맥락과 초등학교 교과서 어휘 연구의 맥락을 한데 다룬 것이다. 국어 순화 운동은 1948년 시작되어 현재까지도 국립국어원을 중심으로 진행되고 있다. 초등학교 교과서 어휘 연구는 종합적 연구와 더불어 개별 교과들에서 교육 내용에 대한 검토로 이루어지고 있다. 초등학교의 국어, 수학, 사회, 과학, 도덕 교과서를 바탕으로 순화 대상어를 선정하였다. 선정은 교과서 말뭉치에서 어휘 추출, 추출 어휘에서 순화 대상어 선별, 순화 대상어에 대한 전문가 평정의 단계를 거쳤다. 그 결과 총 1,341개의 순화 대상어와 가장 순화할 필요가 있는 4등급 259개를 필두로 3등급 309개, 2등급 427개, 1등급 346개 어휘가 도출되었다. 다음으로 각 교과별로 순화 대상어 선정 양상을 질적으로 살핀 결과 초등학교 교과서 어휘의 순화 방향에 있어 크게 두 가지 시사점을 얻을 수 있었다. 먼저 국어과와 수학과의 경우 실제성을 목적으로 사용되는 자료들은 순화 대상어를 수정하는 것으로 교육적 가치를 높일 수 있다. 사회과와 과학과의 경우 학습 내용어 중 순화 대상어가 되는 것들이 많아 이독성의 문제나 학습자 오개념 형성과 관련해서 전문가와의 협업을 필요로 한다.

This study introduces the selection of target words to refine in elementary school textbooks based on a large corpus. This is a combination of the context of the Korean language purification movement and the context of studying vocabulary in elementary school textbooks. Target words to refine were extracted from elementary school textbooks, whose subjects included Korean language, mathematics, social studies, science and ethics. The selection went through the following steps: extracting vocabulary from the corpus of textbooks, selecting target words from the extracted vocabulary, and experts’ evaluation and selection of target words to refine. As a result, 1,341 target words were selected. Qualitative review of the selection of the target words to refine in each subject gave two implications for the direction for purifying the vocabulary in elementary school textbooks. First of all, materials used for authentic purposes in subjects like Korean language and mathematics can have enhanced educational value if refined words are used. Social studies and science departments need to work with experts on the issues of readability and formation of the misconception of learners.
