This study attempts to analyze diverse aspects of impoliteness found in Mexican televised electoral debates. In this paper ‘impoliteness' refers not only to the cases in which the speaker performs an act of communication deliberately to threaten or attack the face of the interlocutor, or the hearer perceives the given speech act to be intentionally face-attacking, in accordance with the definition of Culpeper(2005), but also to the cases in which impolite effects may be produced even without the speaker's impolite intention in line with Kaul de Marlangeon(2008). Since the primary purpose of the electoral debate will be to eventually win votes from TV viewers or voters, participants are expected to use a variety of impoliteness strategies that undermine the face of the rival candidates. The previous studies on the impoliteness of the political debate on television in Spanish have focused on the debates mainly for Spain's presidential elections. The current study offers an additional study case on impoliteness found in Non-European Spanish television debate, so the results of the study will allow direct comparison of diverse impolite speech acts used in television debates among different Spanish Speaking countries.
