Arthur Conan Doyle's 'Homes Series' is a remarkable cultural phenomenon in the turn of the 20th century. Detective narratives are closely interrelated with the daily life of large cities. The key in this correlation is that the everyday experience of the urban masses began to represent itself in popular narrative form and was firstly acknowledged in the reading experience of the public readership. This study aims to examine the moment of the paradox and contradiction in ‘Holmes series’ of the everyday life of the urban masses in the Fin-de-Siecle. Given the role of popular genres, Holmes series suggests a compromise for anxieties in the urban everyday life, and shares this compromise with the public. This study also tries to analyze Holmes Series’s strength as a popular narrative in integrating conflicting elements to dissolve the contradictions and paradoxes of urban life properly in the structure of the detective narrative. In most of Holmes's best episodes, stories expertly achieved the right balance of both providing an intellectual adventure and easing the public of their anxieties of modern life. Another emphasis of this study falls on the fact that detective narrative is basically maintained in the workings of the double orders: of both crime and inquest, and secrecy and its disclosure. For this reason, it presupposes a 'different way of telling' to find other answers, and the tension of a detective story comes out from this double orders of the structure.
