1873년에 출간된 알퐁스 도데의 단편소설집 『월요 이야기(Contes du lundi)』에는 모두 42편의 단편소설이 수록되어 있다. 그중 가장 잘 알려져 있는 동시에 한국의 독자들에게도 무척이나 친숙한 단편소설 「마지막 수업(La Derniere Classe)」이 소설집의 첫 번째 작품이며, 그 뒤를 이어 우리가 살펴볼 단편 「당구(La Partie de billard)」가 수록되어 있다. 『월요 이야기』에는 보불전쟁과 파리 혁명정부 시절의 여러 전투와 사건들이 사실주의적 필치로 담겨져 있다. 알자스-로렌 지방을 빼앗긴 프랑스인들의 슬픔이 「마지막 수업」에서 그려지고 있다면, 「당구」에서는 전쟁의 포화가 쏟아지는 긴박한 상황에서도 ‘당구 게임’에 몰두한 나머지 전투에서는 패하고 당구 게임에서는 승리한 장군이 등장한다. 「당구」는 1972년 우리말로 처음 번역된 이후 「사령관의 당구시합」, 「당구 게임」, 「당구 내기」 등의 제목으로 42종의 번역본이 있는데, 조사된 42종의 번역본들 중 대부분은 『마지막 수업, 별』, 『도데 단편집』 등의 제목이 붙은 단행본에 포함되어 있다. 우리는 서론격인 예비적 고찰에서 원작 소개와 번역본 현황에 대해서 언급하고, 아울러 번역평가 대상 번역본들 사이의 영향관계를 중점적으로 살펴볼 것이며, 이어 본문에서는 도데의 「당구」 번역본에 대한 토대평가와 심화평가를 수행하고, 그 결과를 바탕으로 번역본들을 좀 더 자세히 살펴볼 것이며, 결론적으로 「당구」 번역본들에 대한 종합적인 평가를 간략하게 언급함으로써 고전의 반열에 오르고 그로 인해 늘 다시 읽기의 대상이 되는 문학 작품의 번역이 갖는 명암을 다시금 생각해보고자 한다. 우리는 이 글이 대학에서 프랑스어를 통해 문학 일반을 접하는 후학들, 또한 일반 독자들까지도 포함한 잠재 독자들에게 문학 읽기와 번역과 번역본 선택의 문제에 작은 도움이 되기를 바란다.

The Contes du lundi, a short story book by Alphonse Daudet, published in 1873, contains 42 short stories. The short story La Derniere Classe, the most well-known and most familiar to Korean readers, is the first of the novels, followed by a short story La Partie de billiard that we will look at. In the Contes du lundi, several battles and events during the 'Franco-Prussian War' and during the Paris Revolutionary Government are factual. If the sadness of the French people deprived of Alsace-Lorraine is described in the La Derniere Classe, but in La Partie de billard, even in the urgent situation where the saturation of the war is pouring, appears a general, in the 'battle', losing, but in the 'billard game', winning. In the preliminary review, we will focus on the introduction of the original work, the status of the translation and the relationship between the translations, and then we will carry out the base evaluation, the deepening evaluation and the comprehensive evaluation of the La Partie de billard's translations of Alphonse Daudet.
