해마다 많은 사회복지사들이 배출됨에도 불구하고 사회복지실천 현장은 인력난에 허덕이고 있다. 또한 증거기반 실천(Evidence-Based Practice), 책무성 등이 중요시됨에 따라 사회적 책임에 대한 고민도 깊다. 연구자는 이러한 위기와 변화의 시기에 사회복지사들에게 사회복지실천의 의미와 본질이 무엇인지에 대한 물음을 던질 필요가 있음을 인식하게 되었다. 본 연구는 사회복지실천의 의미와 본질이 무엇인지에 대한 성찰적 질문에서 출발했다. 연구자는 Van Manen(2016)의 자기 성찰적 현상학적 연구방법으로 접근했다. 연구에는 10명의 현직 사회복지사들이 참여하였다. 연구결과 211개의 의미단위를 구성했고, 이것들을 압축, 요약하여 54개의 드러난 주제, 13개의 본질적 주제를 추출하였다. 이와 같은 과정을 통해 구성한 범주들을 Van Manen(2016)이 제시한 4가지 근본적 실존체에 배열했다. 연구자는 반성적 글쓰기로 사회복지사의 자기성찰을 통한 경험 속에 내재 되어 있는 사회복지실천의 의미와 본질은 무엇이지를 이해하고 이것이 가지는 사회적 의의가 무엇이며 사회복지사들이 보다 성찰적이고 인간중심적인 실천을 하기 위한 과제를 제안하였다.

Although more social workers graduated every year, the field of social work has been experiencing a labor shortage. Furthermore social responsibility is developing with regard to the importance of evidence-based practice and accountability. The author became to raise the question: “what are the meaning and nature of social work practices for social workers?”. The author used the self-reflective phenomenological research of Van Manen(2016) by interviweing10 social workers at welfare centers. As a result, 211 semantic units were drawn 54 exposed subjects and 13 essential subjects were extracted at the final state. Categories constructed in this process were arranged in four basic existential units in accordance with Van Manen(2016). Using reflective writing, the researcher author came to understand the meaning and nature of social work practice inherent in social workers' self-reflective experience and their social significance and proposed some tasks for the more reflective and human-centered practice of the social workers.
