구술문화에서 설화의 구연은 담론을 구성하는 주요한 방식이다. 특히 기존 연구에서 중요하게 거론된 바 있는 ‘논쟁’은 설화를 통한 담론구성의 핵심적인 기제라고 생각한다. 구술문화는 근본적으로 논쟁적이다. 구술문화의 논쟁적 성격이 구술담론을 형성하는 데 독특한 방식으로 작용했고, 구비설화를 둘러싼 논쟁적 면모는 그 결과물이라는 것이다. 본고의 논의는 ‘구술서사담론의 논쟁적 기능에 대한 이론화’를 위한 시도이다. 이러한 논의를 위해 구술담론이 형성되는 과정을 구체적으로 살필 수 있는 이야기 판에 주목했다. 선행연구에서 구체적인 설화 유형을 중심으로 논의가 이루어졌던 것과는 다른 방향이다. 이야기판이 논쟁을 통해서 어떻게 담론을 구성해 가는지 구체적으로 살피고, 이것이 구술담론에서 차지하는 위상이 어떠한지를 함께 살폈다. 특히 논쟁이 갖는 구술문화적 의의를 플라톤이나 아리스토텔레스 등이 체계화한 변증술과 연결시켜 논의하였다. 구술문화에서 현실적 삶에 유용한 담론을 구성하는 과정은 무척 중요하다. 구술담론의 핵심은 현실에 필요한 새로운 지식을 찾아내는 데 있는 것이 아니라, 앞서 존재하는 통념적 지식을 검토하여 그것이 현실성을 획득하도록 새롭게 구성하는 데 있다. 여기서 중요한 것은 통념적 지식의 검토인데, 바로 여기에서 논쟁이 중요한 역할을 수행한다. 그러니까 논쟁은 통념적 지식을 검토하는 이야기판의 역동적 움직임의 일부라는 것이다.

In oral culture, telling folktales in storytelling sites is the main way of constructing discourse. In particular, the “agonistic debate”, which has been discussed in previous research, is considered to be a key mechanism for constructing discourse through folktales. Oral culture is fundamentally agonistic. The agonistic nature of oral culture has worked in a unique way to form oral discourse, and the agonistic aspect surrounding folktales is the result of this. This study attempts to “theorize the agonistic function of oral narrative discourse”. For this discussion, we focused on storytelling sites that can examine specifically the process of oral discourse formation. This is a different direction from that of previous studies, which focused on specific types of folktales. We examine the details of how the discourse was organized through agonistic debates in storytelling sites and examine their status in oral discourse. In particular, the oral cultural significance of agonistic debates is discussed in connection with the dialectic systematized by Plato and Aristotle. In oral culture, the process of constructing useful discourse in real life is very important. The core of oral discourse lies in reviewing the conventional knowledge (endoxa) that existed earlier and in reconstructing it to obtain reality. What is important here is to review conventional knowledge, where agonistic debates play an important role. Therefore, agonistic debates are a part of the dynamic movement of storytelling sites that examine conventional knowledge. Agonistic debates on folktales in storytelling sites play a key role in constructing oral discourse.
