The purpose of this study is to investigate the difficulties experienced by beginning stage counselors, and the process of overcoming them in counseling clients with suicidal crisis behaviors, and to present the substantive theory of internal change process. To this end, 11 counselors with counseling experience for suicidal crisis behavior and less than three years of counseling experience were interviewed in-depth and the collected data were analyzed using the ground theory method. As a result, 130 concepts, 50 subcategories, and 16 categories were derived in the open coding process. As a result of the axis coding, the central phenomenon experienced by beginning stage counselors in suicidal behavior counseling appeared to be ‘endurance and struggle’. The causal conditions that affected this were ‘fear of client's suicidal behavior’ and ‘empathy occurrence’. Contextual condition was ‘creating a support system’. The mediating conditions were ‘carefulness’, ‘thankfulness’, ‘self-comfort’, ‘focusing on self-development’. Action/interaction strategies for solving central phenomena were shown as ‘face vulnerable, ‘trying to recognize and adjust emotions’, ‘showing as it is’ and ‘accepting as it is’. Also, as a result of the action/interaction strategy, ‘improvement of coping skills’, ‘extended understanding of clients’, ‘mental strength’, and ‘growth in the way of life’. These process can be summarized in the four stages of ‘confusion stage’, ‘awareness stage’, ‘acknowledgement stage’ and ‘acceptance stage’. The core category for the process of beginning stage counselors in suicidal behavior counseling was ‘moving forward one step at a time even shaken’. Based on the results of this study, we discussed the internal change process of the beginning stage counselors in counseling clients with suicidal crisis behaviors and suggested a follow-up study.
