본 연구는 대학생들을 대상으로 눈치경험이 그들의 적응·발달의 구조와 과정에 어떤 의미를 갖는 지에 대한 질적 연구이다. 예비연구에서는 11명의 학생들의 자기 성찰적 글쓰기 속에서 나타난 성격과 눈치의 관계에 대해 분석함으로써 눈치연구의 주요문제를 설정했다. 본격적인 연구에서는 8명의 대학생들을 대상으로 포커스 그룹면담, 5명의 보충 포커스 그룹면담을 실시하고 축어록을 전사한 후 근거이론을 활용하여 개방(초기)코딩, 축코딩, 선택코딩을 실시하였다. 또한 면담과 코딩의 전 과정에서 눈치경험의 체험적 본질 및 주요범주 간의 발생적 동기관계를 파악하는 과정에서 현상학적 방법을 보완적으로 사용했다. 분석결과 개방(초기)코딩과 축코딩에서 1차 개념 203개, 2차 개념 104개, 하위범주 37개, 범주 11개를 얻었다. 축코딩에서 눈치의 사회역사적 맥락, 대인관계의 구조적, 내용적 상황, 눈치마음, 눈치 보기와 눈치 없는 행동, 눈치 없는 행동에 대한 제재, 눈치회의, 눈치수용 혹은 눈치 안보기 그리고 최종적으로 눈치적응 간의 나선형의 이론 모델을 얻었다. 선택코딩을 통해 ‘눈치회의에서 공적 자기와 사적 자기 간의 갈등과 조정의 과정’을 핵심범주로 파악했다. 과정분석에서 5가지 유형의 눈치적응과정 모형을 얻었다. 이와 같은 발견을 근거로 연구와 치료적 개입을 위한 시사점이 논의되었다.

This qualitative study with Korean undergraduate students aimed to explore the meaning of nunchi experience for their adaptive and developmental process. Major research questions were set up through a preliminary study in which the relations between personality and nunchi found in self-reflective writings of 11 students. In the main study, a focus-group interview with 8 students, a supplementary focus-group interview with 5 students were conducted. And the recoded interviews were transcribed and open coding, axial coding and selective coding based on the grounded theory methods were carried out. In addition, throughout interviewing and coding process a phenomenological approach was used as a complementary method to better understand the essence of experience and the genetic relation of motivation of nunchi experience. From open and axial coding, 203 primary concepts, 104 secondary concepts, 37 subcategories and 11 categories were derived. The axial coding resulted in a spiral theoretical model containing socio-historical context of nunchi, structural and content-wise situation of interpersonal relations of nunchi, nunchi mind, nunchibogi, behaving without nunchi, sanction against behaving without nunchi, doubt concerning nunchi, accepting nunchi or nunchianbogi, and adapting to nunchi. The core category of ‘the process of conflict and reconciliation between public self and private self’ was obtained from the selective coding. Finally, in the process analysis, 5 types of nunchi adaptation process were identified. Based on these findings, implications for research and therapeutic interventions were discussed.
