본 연구는 개인의 소득재분배 선호를 결정하는 다양한 요인 중 문화변수를 중심으로 개인과 국가 수준의 변수를 포함한 분석모형을 제시하여, 복합적 측면에서의 문화 및 주요 변수들의 영향력을 관찰하였다. 집단-격자 문화이론을 적용해서 문화변수를 체계적ㆍ포괄적으로 측정하였으며, 이를 위해 EVS(European Value Survey) 자료를 사용하였다. 분석 대상과 시점은 12개 유럽 국가의 1990년 및 2008-2009년의 두 개 시점으로 하였고 위계선형모형을 사용하였다. 분석결과, 소득재분배에 영향을 미칠 것으로 판단된 집단변수는 개인의 소득재분배 선호에 독립적인 영향을 미치지 못하였으나, 소득 및 정치이념과의 상호작용을 통해서 소득재분배 선호에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 즉 개인의 문화적 정향이 그 자체로는 소득재분배에 대한 영향력이 크지 않지만, 다른 개인적 수준의 특성과 상호작용하면서(수준 내 상호작용) 그 영향력이 유의미하게 발현되었음(예를 들면 개인의 집단적 성향이 자신의 소득과 연계되었을 때는 유의미한 영향력으로 나타남)을 발견하였다. 이러한 발견은 차후 집단-격자 문화이론을 계량적인 실증연구로 발전시켜감에 있어 시사하는 바가 크다.

The purpose of the study is to explore the influence of individual cultural bias on the income redistribution preference, focusing on two types of interacting effects; within the individual level variables (i.e., group*income and group*political ideology) and between individual and national level (i.e., political ideology*Okun index). This study measured cultural bias based on the grid-group cultural theory suggested by Douglas. For the empirical analysis, this study acquired data from European Value Survey and selected relevant variables from 12 countries. Applying hierarchical linear model, the study found the following results. First, the cultural variable represented as the group does not have significant effect on the income redistribution preference. However, when it comes to interacting effects, the group variable interacting with other variables such as political ideology and income at the same level showed statistically significant association with the dependent variable. In specific, when the individual’s group inclination is moderated with her income and political ideology, it showed statistically significant influence. This finding is highly suggestive for developing the grid-group culture theory into a quantitative empirical study in the future.
