This paper focuses on grammaticality distinction in Spanish examples of subextraction from direct object. In Spanish, it has been analyzed that it is possible to extract wh-phrases out of base-generated object noun phrases. However, subextraction is not possible from direct object of some Spanish verbs such as golpear, ayudar, acusar, etc. I discuss that these verbs are analyzed as pseudo-transitive verbs which have a different derivation structure from transitive verbs and these two types of verbs have different syntactic properties. Concretely, the spell-out of pseudo-transitive verb involves a conflation operation of a nominal argument-that is, a cognate noun-into abstract verb. I argue that the derivation of pseudo-transitive verbs is naturally explained under the derivational structure proposed by Chomsky(2015) in which assumes the substantive elements of the lexicon. Following Chomsky(2013, 2015), the direct object of pseudo-transitive verb is generated in Spec-R and pseudo-transitive verb assigns a thematic role “GOAL” to direct object. Furthermore, I propose that subextraction from this position is not allowed based on the concept of phase cancellation.
