Lope and Tirso are the main playwrights who dominated Spanish plays in the early 17th century. By comparing and analyzing the dramatic tendencies of Lope and Tirso around pure comedy, the present study aims to establish more intact the distinctive differences between the two playwrights. To this end, comparing the main characters of each of the three major comedic works of Lope and Tirso, one can see that while Lope's pure comedy was determined to leave a social message about absurd customs or institutions, Tirso's pure comedy was relatively stronger in its intention to deliver ethical and instructive messages to the audience.
