본고는 박경리의 대하소설 『토지』에 나타난 동아시아의 심상지리에 대해 고찰한다. 소설은 갑오농민전쟁 이후부터 1945년 해방에 이르는 긴 세월 동안, 한 민족이 어떠한 삶을 살았는가를 그리고 있다. 이 소설이 지니는 역사소설로서의 특징은 무엇일까? 그것은 역사 연표를 통해 기존의 역사가 포착하지 못한 다양한 이야기들(stories)을 삽입시킴으로써, 식민주의적 한계를 지닌 기존의 역사(History)를 충격한다. 이렇게 해서 정신사적인 면에서 재평가되는 것이 조선 사회의 유교적인 근대성이라 할 수 있다. 일본적 근대성은 ‘건축’과 ‘무기’를 생산하여 침략주의로 나아간다는 점을 비판한다. 이러한 작업을 위해 작가는 양반계층, 농민계층, 여성이라는 세 가지 층위에서 이 시간들이 어떠한 운명을 만들어냈는가를 탐구한다. 평사리라는 공간이 지닌 확장성을 통해 그러한 민족 서사가 가능해진다. 작가의 삶 속에서 이러한 서사성은 ‘사소설’이라는 비판에 대한 이의를 통해, 역사 자체에 맞서는 것으로서의 소설의 추구로 나타난다. 그런 의미에서 소설 『토지』는 기존의 한국 근대문학사와 겨루는 형국이다. 정신사적인 면에서 볼 때, 일본의 근대성은 전통의 결핍의 산물이라고 평가절하되기도 한다. 이러한 식민지 근대성에 맞서서 침묵을 강요당했던 세계를 섬세하게 재구축하고 있는 소설이 『토지』라 할 수 있다.

This paper examines the imagined geographies of East Asia that appeared in Park Kyung-ri’s epic novel “Toji.” The novel describes the life of the Korean people during the long period from the Kao Peasant War to the liberation of 1945. What characterizes this novel as a historical novel? It challenges existing colonial history by inserting various stories that have not been captured in the annals of history. This is the Confucian modernity of Joseon society. Japanese modernity are criticized for merely producing Western-style architecture and weapons, actually moving toward an imperial desire to colonize the others. For this work, the author explores what kind of fate these times have created in the three strata: the yangban class, the peasant class and the woman. The extensibility of the Pyeongsa-ri space enables such ethnic narrative. In this sense, the novel “Toji” is competing against the existing history of modern Korean literature. In the writer’s viewpoint of mental history, Japan’s modernity is often undervalued, stemming from a lack of confucian tradition. The novel “Toji” is delicately rebuilding a world that was forced to remain silent in the face of this colonial modernity.
