이 글에서는 구미호의 ‘특별함’과 ‘다름’에 대한 상상력이 형성되고 확장되면서 새롭게 파생되는 과정을 기존 이야기에 대한 인용, 재인용, 반론으로 분석하였다. 특별한 여우에 대한 상상은 비현실적인 신이성(神異性)을 첨가하는 방식으로 확장되면서 대상에 대한 인식에 따라 다양한 방식으로 파생된다. 신성과 마성, 신성과 마성의 혼재, 동일한 존재의 양면적 성격, 종교와 대립 혹은 습합을 통한 변형 등의 방식으로 특별함이 나타난다. 여기에 인간의 구미호에 대한 인식, 사회적 맥락, 이전 이야기에 대한 반론과 새로운 문화 현상과의 혼종 등에 의해 구미호에 대한 상상력은 다양한 방식으로 펼쳐진다. 구미호의 특별함은 현실 경험을 초월한 신이함으로 작동함과 동시에 인간과 다른 존재로 규정하는 ‘다름’의 원인이 된다. 구미호의 ‘다름’에 주목하면 현실적 경험과 일상적 존재와의 차이를 강조하고, 경계 밖의 요괴로 구미호를 규정하게 된다. 그러나 ‘주체와 타자’, ‘인간과 요괴’의 이분법적 인식에 대한 반론으로 인간과 비인간 사이에 위계를 해체하고 경계를 거부하는 이야기들이 등장한다. 이러한 파생, 확장, 반론은 이질적인 것들이 접속하여 새롭게 계열화되고 계열들이 복잡하게 관련 맺으면서 새로운 상상력과 서사가 구성·창조되는 과정이다. 이상의 논의는 기존에 구미호의 형성, 혹은 변모과정을 통시적 논리로 파악하려던 것에서 벗어나서, 구미호를 동질적인 하나의 실체가 아니라 중심 없이 불규칙하게 분열된 뿌리줄기(Rhizome) 같은 것으로 보고자 한 것이다.

This study set out to analyze the formation, expansion, and new derivation process of imagination about the “specificity” and “difference” of a legendary fox with nine tails through the quotes, re-quotes, and counterarguments of her old stories. Imagination about a special fox expands in a way of adding unrealistic divinity to her, deriving from it in various ways according to the perceptions of objects. Her specificity is revealed through holiness and devilishness, mixture of holiness and devilishness, ambivalent nature of the same being, and transformation through religion, confrontation, or combination. As more elements are added to them including people’s awareness of a legendary fox with nine tails, social contexts, counterargument to the old stories, and hybrid with a new cultural phenomenon, imagination about a legendary fox with nine tails develops in various ways. The specificity of a legendary fox with nine tails works as the source of divinity to transcend experiences in reality and, at the same time, becomes the cause of “difference” to define her as something different from human beings. When there is a focus on her “difference,” people get to emphasize differences between realistic experiences and everyday beings and define her as a monster outside the boundary. New stories, however, emerge to deconstruct the hierarchy between human beings and non-human being and refuse to accept the boundary between them as counterarguments to the dichotomous perceptions of “subject and object” and “man and monster.” Such derivations, expansions, and counterarguments present the construction and creation process of new imagination and narratives as heterogeneous things are connected together and systematized with the resulting systems forming complex relations each other. The present study led these discussions to escape from the old approach to figure out the creation or transformation process of a legendary fox with nine tails with diachronic logic and see her as a rhizome that has divided irregularly with no center rather than a single homogeneous entity.
