본 논문은 일제강점기에 조선총독부 및 일본인이 발간한 조선전설 자료집을 연구 대상으로 삼아, 이들 자료집에 적용된 전설의 규정과 범주는 무엇이며, 그 범주 설정상의 특징은 무엇인지를 고찰한 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 전설이라는 명칭과 용어의 용례를 일제강점기 이전의 문헌, 일제강점기의 잡지, 신문 등을 대상으로 통시적으로 고찰하였다. 그 결과 전설이라는 명칭은 이전부터 조선 사회에서 사용되어 왔으며, 오늘날 학문적 설화 분류상의 전설에 근접하여 사용된 점도 확인된다. 그러나 일제강점기의 자료에서 파악되는 일련의 상황을 고려해 볼 때, 전설에 대한 우리의 자생적 인식이 근대 한국의 학문 체계로 이어지지는 못했던 것으로 보인다. 1913년에 조선총독부는 조선 전국을 대상으로 전설과 동화를 조사하여 『전설동화조사사항』이라는 자료조사 보고서를 발간한다. 이를 계기로 일본인들에 의해 ‘조선전설’이 본격적으로 포착되기 시작되고, 아울러 전설을 모아 놓은 자료집의 서명(書名)에 전설이라는 명칭이 널리 부여되기 시작한다. 그리고 조선전설에 대한 범주는 조선총독부의 조선 식민통치 정책에 따라 몇몇 작품 및 내용들만 포함하는 등 매우 제한적으로 정립된다. 이후 일본인에 의한 조선전설 자료집이 10여 권 이상 발간되면서 조선총독부가 정립해 놓은 전설 규정과 범주에 대한 인식은 일제강점기 내내 조선 사회에서 지속·확산된다. 그 과정에서 조선신화를 조선전설의 범주로 인식하려고 한 특징도 면면히 계승된다. 일제강점기에서의 이러한 전설 규정과 범주에 대한 인식은 해방 전후 조선인이 발간한 조선전설 자료집이나 1960년대 이후 방송 매체를 통한 전설의 대중화 등에 직간접으로 영향을 끼쳤을 것으로 추정된다는 점에서, 이와 관련한 체계적 후속 연구를 기대한다.

This paper examines the collection of Joseon legends published during the Japanese occupation. The analysis focuses on the characteristics of the legendary categories and category settings applied to the Legendary collection. First of all, the name and terminology of legend are considered. As a result, the name legend has been used in Joseon society for a long time, and it is also confirmed that it is used close to the legend in the classification of tales today. However, considering the series of situations identified in the Japanese colonial period, this did not seem to lead to the modern Korean academic system. In 1913, Chosun Government-General published a report entitled “Legendary Fairy Tale Survey” by examining legends and fairy tales across Korea. Old stories are collected in large quantities, and the collection of materials is named "Legend", and the category of Joseon legend is very limited. Since then, more than 10 books on Joseon legends have been published. And the legendary category established by Chosun Government-General spreads throughout the Japanese occupation. In the process, the perspective of recognizing Joseon mythology as a category of legend is also understood. These points are noted in connection with the legendary book published by the Koreans and the future of the legend that will walk the path of popularization.
