16세기 중반까지만 해도 스페인에게 동양은 모호한 존재였다. 많은 사람들은 여전히 마르코 폴로의 여행담을 바탕으로 신비롭고 풍요로운 동방의 세계를 상상했다. 그러나 15세기 말 포르투갈이 인도양 항로를 개척한 이후 많은 선교사들과 무역 상인들이 중국과 일본의 해안으로 진출하였고, 1565년 신대륙과 필리핀 간의 왕복 항로가 개척된 이후 스페인도 필리핀을 기지 삼아 중국 남부지역과 일본으로 진출하였다. ‘비단길’이 중국과 유럽을 잇는 대륙의 교역로라면, 스페인이 개척한 ‘은 길’은 ‘스페인―멕시코―필리핀―중국’을 잇는 대양의 교역로이다. 스페인은 이 ‘은 길’을 통해 16세기 중·후반부터 아시아와 직접적인 교류를 시작하였고, 그러면서 그동안 상상 속에서 알게 되던 중국이 구체적인 실체로 다가오게 되었으며, 그 결과로 동·서양의 본격적인 문화 및 학문 교류가 16세기부터 일어난다. 16∼17세기 동·서양의 문화 교류는 주로 중남미 누에바 에스파냐의 가톨릭 교구에서 중국으로 파견된 후안 코보, 마르틴 데 라다, 후안 곤살레스 데 멘도사, 페르난데스 데 나바레테 등과 스페인 출신의 선교사들에 의해 이루어졌다. 이에 본 연구는 16∼17세기 중남미 누에바 에스파냐의 가톨릭 교구에서 파견된 스페인 출신의 선교사들에 의해 이루어진 동·서 문화교류의 현상을 살펴보았다.

Until the middle of the 16th century, the East was a vague existence for Spain. Many people still imagined a mysterious and rich Eastern world based on Marco Polo’s travel stories. However, since the route between New Spain(Mexico) and the Philippines was pioneered in 1565, Spain has also made inroads into southern China, using the Philippines as its base. If the “Silk Road” is the trade route between China and Europe, then Spain’s pioneering “Silver Road” is the trade route of ‘Spain―Mexico―the Philippines―China’. And Spain began direct exchanges with China in the middle and late 16th century through this “Silver Road”, and as a result, China, which had been known in its imagination, came to be a concrete entity, and as a result, full-fledged cultural exchanges between East and West took place in the 16th and 17th centuries. This cultural exchange between East and West was mainly conducted by Spanish missionaries of New Spain’s diocese, including Martin de Rada, Juan Gonzalez de Mendoza, Juan Cobo and Fernandez de Navarete. This study examine the phenomenon of East-West cultural exchanges conducted by missionaries from Spain dispatched from the Latin American dioceses in the 16th and 17th centuries.
