이 연구는 구어 자료를 이용하여 성별, 연령 및 역할(격식/비격식) 등의 사회적 요인에 따라 {네}와 {예}가 실현되는 차이를 분석하였다. 그리고 설문조사를 통해 사람들이 {네}와 {예}의 차이를 실제로 어떻게 생각하고 있는지 살펴보았다. 성별에 따른 분석 결과로 여성 화자는 {네}를 주로 사용하였고 남성 화자는 {네}와 {예} 두 단어를 모두 사용하였다. 연령에 따른 분석 결과, 10대는 {예}보다 {네}를 사용하는 양상이 압도적으로 많이 나타났다. 20대∼50대 이상의 화자는 두 단어를 모두 사용하였다. 역할에 따른 분석 결과, 20대 이상 남성 화자의 경우 격식이 필요한 상황에서 {네}보다 {예}를 주로 사용하는 결과를 보였다. 이와 같은 결과를 바탕으로 {네}는 다양한 연령대의 남녀가 일반적으로 사용하는 단어이고 {예}는 성인 남성이 격식적인 상황에서 특별하게 사용하는 단어라고 볼 수 있다. {네}와 {예}의 사용의 차이는 격식이라는 변수가 크게 작용하는데 여성과 10대보다 격식적인 상황을 자주 접해 왔던 성인 남성에게서 {예}가 주로 나타나게 된 것이다. {예}가 격식이라는 변수와 관련하여 실현되는 것은 실제 사람들의 인식으로도 증명된다. 서울·경기 출신의 30∼40대 남녀를 대상으로 {네}와 {예}의 사용의 차이에 관한 설문조사를 실행한 결과, {예}의 경우 격식적인 상황, 공손·예의를 지켜야 하는 상황과 공적인 관계, 지위가 높은 상대와 같이 격식적인 상황과 상대에게 주로 사용된다는 응답이 큰 비중을 차지하였다. {네}의 경우 일반·일상적인 상황, 사적인 관계, 친한 상대와 같이 비격식과 관련된 응답이 주로 나타났다.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the difference between the use of {ne} and {ye} caused by social variables such as gender, age and tenor. To investigate this, I analyzed the realization of {ne} and {ye} using TV drama spoken data, and conducted a survey to examine people’s thinking about the difference between these two words. As a result, women used {ne} more than {ye}, but men used {ne} and {ye} evenly. In age, teenagers used {ne} overwhelmingly, while those in their 20s and 50s used both {ne} and {ye}. In the case of male speakers in their 20s or more, {ye} was used more than {ne} when the speaker and listener had a formal social role relationship. Based on this, people generally use {ne}, which can be interpreted as a special use of {ye} in situations where an men needs to be formal. Since men often have a lot of conversations in formal positions after their 20s, they use {ye} another expression that is different from the usual one. In other words, {ne} is generally used by men and women of various ages, while {ye} is specially used by men in formal situations. The fact that {ye} is influenced by formality is similar to the perception of people obtained by conducting survey. The survey showed that {ye} is used in formal and {ne} is used in informal.
