이 논문은 병자호란 이후 끊어진 명나라와의 외교를 비밀리에 수행한 독보(獨步)라는 승려가 임경업(林慶業)을 주인공으로 하는 서사에 조연으로 등장하면서 만들어진 다양한 양상의 캐릭터에 주목하였다. 역사 속 독보는 명나라 군대에 고용된 조선인 승려나 대명 해상 밀무역상인으로 추정된다. 임경업에게 체포되면서 밀사로 발탁되어 요서(遼西)·산동(山東) 지역에 주둔하던 명군과 조선 사이의 연락 임무를 수행하였다. 최명길·정태화 같은 대청온건파들을 주인공으로 하는 후일담이나 묘도문자(墓道文字)에서 독보는 승려로 등장하여, 이야기의 주인공이 명나라를 배신하지 않았다는 증거로 활용되었다. 하지만 대명의리론자들이 망명객 임경업을 대명의리의 큰 뜻을 이루지 못하고 중도에 죽어간 비극적 영웅으로 형상화하면서, 독보는 결정적 순간에 임경업을 배신함으로써 그의 원대한 뜻을 무력화시키는 역할로 변모하였다. <임장군전>류의 국문 소설 속의 독보는 임경업의 탈출을 좌절시켜, 그를 악인 김자점의 손으로 끌려가게 만든 배신자의 이미지로 굳혀졌다. 독보가 조력자에서 배신자 혹은 악인으로 변모되는 과정은 임경업의 비극적 영웅성이 강화되는 과정에 조응하고 있다. 이는 서사 문법에 따른 자연스러운 현상이기도 하지만, 그가 관서의 변경민이면서 동시에 승려로 인식된 점도 일정한 영향을 끼쳤다.
This essay intends to focus on the various facets of a character ‘Dokbo(獨步)’, a minor character in the epic of Im Gyeong-eop(林慶業) and a diplomat in conclave between the two countries who are in rupture since the Byeongja Ho’ran(丙子胡亂) war; Joseon and the Ming dynasty. The actual Dokbo is assumed to be a Korean employed by the military forces of Ming dynasty, or a korean smuggler. Arrested by Im Gyeong-oep, he was chosen as a secret envoy destined to keep connections between Joseon and the troops of Ming dynasty residing in Sandong(山東) and Lioxi(遼西). In the after tales and the tomb inscriptions of moderate supporters of Chung dynasty such as Choi myeong-gil and Jeong tae-hwa, Dokbo appears as a monk in order to demonstrate how the main character did not betray the Ming dynasty. However, as Ming dynasty supporters commence to describe Im gyeong-oep as a tragic hero who had been unable to accomplish his faith towards the dynasty, Dokbo suddenly becomes a betrayer who nullifies the will of Im gyeong-oep. He gained his image as a betrayer from the < Im Gyeong-oep Jeon > typed Korean literatures; he discouraged Im Gyeong-oep’s escape and handed him to Kim Ja-Jeom. The increase of tragic heroism of Im Gyeong-eop coincides with the process of Dokbo becoming a betrayer or an evil man. Though the flow belongs to a natural epic format, his origin of Gwanseo region and his status as a Buddhist monk also had affected the epic.
