본고는 식민지 시기 염상섭 소설의 전개과정에서 이념적·형식적으로 큰 차이를 드러내는 「만세전」과 「삼대」 사이를 매개해 줄 수 있는 내재적 근거를 마련하고자 하는 문제의식에서 「진주는 주었으나」에 주목하였다. 이러한 문제의식은 「진주는 주었으나」가 「삼대」로 대표되는 염상섭 장편소설의 주제적 특징이라 할 수 있는 돈과 성의 세속적인 욕망에 대한 탐색을 통해 식민지 현실의 일상을 재현하면서도, 한편으로는 「만세전」에서와 같은 보편주의적 추상적 근대 지향의 이념적 시각에서 식민지 조선의 타락한 현실을 문제화하고 있는 양상을 보여준다는 판단에 근거한 것이었다. 본고의 논점을 정리하면 두 가지로 요약할 수 있다. 첫째, 「진주는 주었으나」의 서사는 ‘신성한 연애’와 ‘속 연애’의 역학 관계를 보여주는 연애의 정치학을 통해 타락한 식민지 현실을 비판하는 한편 ‘신성한 연애’의 불가능성을 문제화하고 있다. 둘째, 「진주는 주었으나」 서사의 이념적 비전으로 제시된 ‘통일된 인격’은 보편적 추상적 담론의 구성물이다. 그것의 이념적 효과로 인해 「진주는 주었으나」의 서사에서 식민지 현실에 대한 비판은 도덕적 차원에 제약되는데, 이는 ‘오각 연애’ 스캔들 기사에 내장된 젠더화된 남성의 욕망, 그것에 수반된 여성의 타자화와 내적 관련을 맺고 있다.
