본 연구는 소설 『바리데기』에서 바리가 마주하는 죽음을 생사관의 관점에서 분석하고, 주변인들의 죽음이 바리에게 남기는 통증과 통증에 대한 치유의 과정을 모색하고자 한다. 생사학은 태어나서 죽을 때까지 인간의 삶과 죽음에 관한 총체적인 학문으로, 본 연구에서 삶과 죽음을 나누지 않고 함께 아우르는 관점에서 논의하였다. 바리가 마주하는 죽음을 가족의 죽음과 서천여행에 만난 망자의 죽음으로 나누어 살펴보았다. 바리가 직면하는 가족의 죽음을 죽음의 필연성, 죽음의 가변성, 죽음의 예측불가능성, 죽음의 편재성으로 분석하고, 가족의 죽음이 바리 삶의 근원적인 불안감을 형성한 것을 알 수 있었다. 그러한 불안감은 바리에게 영적인 힘을 부여하며 바리가 어떤 위기 상황도 극복할 수 있는 강한 존재로 만들었다. 바리가 서천 여행을 하며 만나는 망자들은 자신의 죽음에 대한 의미와 억울함에 대해 질문한다. 바리는 서천 여행 동안 그들의 죽음에 대한 답을 구하며, 자신의 고통과 그들의 고통을 함께 바라보게 된다. 인간의 삶은 고통이고, 죽음은 존재를 소멸시키는 것이 아니라 존재를 변화시키는 것으로 이해하게 된다. 또한 인간의 마음 속 미움은 자신의 지옥이고, 감옥이라는 것을 깨닫는다. 스스로 자기 안에 있는 미움을 덜어내는 것이 자기치유의 방법이라는 것을 알게 된다.
