그동안 직업계고 학생들의 국가직무능력표준(NCS) 의사소통 능력 향상에 대한 요구가 지속적으로 있어 왔다. 이에 2015 개정 국어과 교육과정에서 취업을 목표로 하는 고등학생을 대상으로 직무 관련 국어사용능력 향상을 위한 ‘실용 국어’ 과목이 신설되었다. 실용 국어는 선택 과목이기 때문에 교사의 선택에 따라 교육과정의 실행여부가 결정된다. 이 연구에서는 직업계고에 재직 중이면서 선택 과목 선정에 참여한 교사들의 사례연구를 통해 실용 국어 과목 선택에 영향을 미치는 요인을 알아보았다. 직업계 고등학교에서는 학생들의 진학이 아닌 취업을 목표로 하기 때문에 전문교과를 중시하였고 국어의 교과중요도는 낮았다. 국어 교사는 수업시수 배정과 업무 분장에서 불이익을 받는 등 근속적 몰입을 저해하는 환경에 놓여있었다. 이러한 환경에서 교사의 수업개선 의지가 높을수록 실용국어를 선택하였다. 또한 지도하는 학생들의 학업성취가 낮을수록 실용 국어를 선택하였으며, 교사가 학생들의 취업 관련 교육 요구를 수용할수록 실용 국어를 선택하였다. 무엇보다도 ‘핵심적으로 가르쳐야 할 것’과 관련된 국어교육에 대한 교사 신념이 실용 국어 선택에 크게 영향을 미쳤다.

There has been a continuous demand for improving National Competency Standards communication skills among vocational high school students. In order to improve job-related Korean language proficiency, a new course titled ‘Practical Korean’ was established in the 2015 revised Korean curriculum for high school students aiming for employment. Since Practical Korean is an elective course, it is up to teachers to decide whether or not to implement the curriculum. This study examines factors that influence the selection of Practical Korean subjects through the case study of teachers at vocational high schools who have participated in the selection of elective courses. At vocational high schools, the emphasis was not on students entering university but mainly on their finding jobs. Therefore, the emphasis was placed more on the specialty curriculum and the Korean curriculum had lower importance. Korean teachers were in an environment where disadvantageous assignments of class hours and segregation of duties were hindering their continuous commitment. In this environment, the more willing the teachers were to improve their classes, the more likely the practical language course was chosen. In addition, the lower the academic performance of the students instructed and the more teachers accepted students' demands for job-related education, the more chose practical Korean. Above all, the teacher's belief in "what should be taught essentially" in Korean Language education greatly influenced their choice of Practical Korean.
