본고는 한국어의 처소격 조사 ‘-에’와 ‘-에서’의 용법을 기술한다. 본고에서는 처소격 ‘-에’와 ‘-에서’의 방향적 의미(각기 ‘to’ 와 ‘from’)로 쓰이는 것도 간헐적으로 다루지만 주로 영어로 ‘in’, ‘at’, 및 ‘on’으로 번역 될 수 있는 정적인 장소의 의미로 쓰는 경우만 주로 다룬다. 이 두 처소격 조사의 용법에 대한 몇몇 언어학적 기술이 존재하지만, 학습 문법의 부재는 현장에서 한국어를 가르치고 배우는 교사와 학습자 모두에게 커다란 난제가 아닐 수 없다. 본고의 주요 목적은 이 두 처소격 조사의 용법의 총체적인 분석을 제시하여 언어학적 기술과 학습 문법 간의 이러한 공백을 메꾸고자 함에 있다. 이전 연구의 개관에 이어 기존 한국어 교재에 자주 등장하는 술어의 양분화(즉, 동작 술어 대 비동작 술어로 구분)에 기초한 단순화된 규칙에 반증되는 예문들을 중심으로 기술해 나간다. 본고는 이 두 처소격 조사의 용법의 예측을 위해서는 술어의 양분화보다 더 많은 형태·통사·의미적 요소 및 화용론적 요소가 고려되어야 함을 지적한다.

This paper describes the usage of the two locative case markers -ey and -eyse in Korean. Although other functions -ey and -eyse (i.e. directional meanings of ‘to’ and ‘from’, respectively) are briefly touched on, this paper deals mainly with the so-called locative at rest, which can be translated ‘in’, ‘at’, or ‘on’. Even though there are a few linguistic analyses on the topic, the lack of an adequate pedagogical grammar has left both teachers and learners of Korean as a foreign language with a dilemma. The main purpose of this paper is to present a comprehensive analysis of these two locative particles in Korean in the hope that it may fill the gap between linguistic description and its pedagogical use. After a brief survey of previous studies on the topic, the paper deals with apparent counterexamples to the oversimplified rule based on the dichotomy of predicates (i.e. action vs. non-action predicates), which often appears in Korean language textbooks. This paper shows that in determining the correct usage of these two locatives, in addition to the predicate dichotomy, much more morpho-syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic factors need to be considered.
