본고는 윤동주의 「간」이 지닌 상징들의 의미와 그 연결이 어떤 새로운 의미를 만들고 있는지를 꼼꼼한 분석을 통해 확인하려고 한다. 사실 이 시와 관련한 연구는 그리 많지 않다. 상징의 구성 방식이 다소 난해하여 분석과 평가가 잘되지 않은 이유도 있는 듯하다. 하지만 성공한 상징은 그것이 매개한 대상을 매우 효과적으로 설명한다. 이 시의 상징들을 분석하면 이 시를 창작하던 당시 시인의 자아 인식 변모 과정을 잘 이해할 수 있다. 이 시가 시 자체의 의미에서 시인의 삶과 시대로 그 의미가 확장될 수 있는 여지가 많은 작품이기 때문이다. 특히, 다양한 해석의 여지가 있는 그의 시들이 무엇을 뜻하는지를 유추할 자료가 된다는 점에 주목할 필요가 있다. 시인은 이 시에서 고통스러운 자아 성찰의 과정을 통해 현실적 자아를 살찌워 증오와 대립의 세계 속에서 시대의 양심을 지키고 민족의 상황을 외면하지 않겠다는 의지를 피력한다. 그러나 그의 굳건한 의지에도 불구하고 청년의 고귀한 정신세계는 슬프기 그지없다.

The purpose of this article is to confirm the meanings of the symbols in Yun Dong-ju's Liver, and examine how the connections of symbols create new meanings by asking various questions. In fact, there is not much research on this poem. One of the reasons could be that because of the way the symbols are constructed, the poem is hard to analyze and evaluate. However, successful symbols explain the objects they mediate in a very effective way. By analyzing the symbols in his work, it is easy to fully understand how the poet's self-awareness transformed while he wrote the poem. This is because in the poem there is much room for us to extend its meanings to the poet's life and his era. Especially, it is worth noting that this poem can be served as data for us when we try to infer what his poems, especially those with room for various interpretations, mean. In this poem, the poet expresses his strong will to guard the conscience of the time and not to ignore the situation of the nation in the world of hatred and confrontation by enriching his real ego through the process of painful introspective self-reflection. But in spite of his firm will, the noble spirit world of the young man is inexpressibly sad.
