小川洋子の代表作になった『博士の愛した数式』にはたくさんの暗号がちりばめられている。まず、交通事故以来80分しか記憶がない主人公<博士>がいる。過去の記憶は残っているけれど、記憶の積み重ねができないという限定された意識の中に生きなければならない人物である。<博士>は相手のことが覚えられず、家政婦として雇われた<私>のことも毎日、初対面の人物としか考えられないのである。しかし、<博士>にはもっとも絶対的で美しい数学という自分を表すための手段を持っていて、数学を通して<私>と接していくのである。博士の限られた記憶は、あらゆる面で限界のある人間の姿をイメージしているのかも知れない。<博士>の許可でその家に出入することになった<私>の息子に<ルート>と名前を付けたのは頭の形が似ているだけではなく、数学記号のルートと同じ意味で<どんな数字でも嫌がらず自分の中にかくまってやる、実に寛大な記号>のようになってほしい<博士>のルートに対する希望がコード化されていると見ていいと思う。<博士>の時計番号と<私>の靴サイズで<友愛数>を見出したのも、記憶の不確かな中で<私>に対する感謝や親愛の気持を表現する暗号やその解読の結果なのである。<私>を<博士>のところに雇った、となりに住む兄嫁の<未亡人>のルートをめぐる誤解で、<私>と<未亡人>はぶつかり合うことになる。が、<博士>がテーブルの上に残した数式のメモにより、二人は言い争いを止める。<博士>が<神の手帳>の中で覗き見た完全で美しい数字の配列や数式を尊重し、理解できるからである。平穏やお互いの尊重を望む<博士>の願望が皆に受け入れられたのである。
Yoko Ogawa's masterpiece "The Professor And His Beloved Equation" is filled with many codes. First of all, there is a character < Professor > who has only 80 minutes of memory since the traffic accident. He has to live in a limited sense of memory, but cannot accumulate memories. He couldn't remember who is hired as a housekeeper < I >. However, < Professor > has the most absolute and beautiful means of expressing himself through mathematics, and also he’s in contact with < I > through mathematics. It's not just like the shape of the head that he named < I >’s son < Root >, but rather he wants him to be like, in the same sense as the root of a mathematical symbol that is < a very generous symbol that allows someone to hang in any number >. < Professor > found out about < friendship number > was the code and the decoding of expression of gratitude and affection for < I > in the middle of uncertain memory. Because of misunderstanding about the Root of < Widow >, who employs < me > to < Professor > and lives next to him, < I > and < widow > had to argue against each other. However, the quarrel between the two is stopped by a note of the equation left on the table by < Professor >. This is because they have respect and understanding of the perfect and beautiful formulas that < Professor > has seen in the < God’s notebook >. His wish for peace and mutual respect was accepted by them. By deciphering the code, < Professor > has had a good effect on human relationships.
