시원(枾園) 김기동(金起東) 선생(1926~1986)은 2세대 국문학자에 속하는 인물로 그는 앞선 세대들의 학문관, 방법론을 승계하여 고전소설 영역을 독보적으로 천착하다가 이른 나이에 세상을 뜬 인물이다. 그는 초창기 국학자들에 의해서 국문학의 토대가 마련된 점을 인정하면서도 고전소설이 실상에 비해 연구가 미흡한 점을 간파하고 이의 실상과 가치를 밝히는 일을 소명으로 삼았다. 본고는 모색기, 입신기, 활약기, 정리기 등으로 시원의 생애를 4분한 뒤 시기별로 학문연구적 특색을 밝히고자 하였다. 해방 이후 1955년까지는 시원에게 있어 장차 학자로서 어떤 시각으로 무엇을 연구대상으로 삼을지 고심했던 모색기이다. 『국문학개론』의 집필을 통해 그는 국문학의 전체상을 파악할 수 있게 되었음은 물론 고전소설이 실상에 비해 외면당하는 현실과 마주하고 고전소설을 연구대상으로 설정한다. 1956~1959년은 고전소설 연구자로서 위치를 굳히는 입신기라 할 수 있다. 이 시기 시원은 소개되지 않은 작품 발굴에 전념하게 되고 이를 바탕으로 『고대소설개론』과 『이조시대소설론』을 연이어 출간함으로써 세간의 이목을 집중시킨다. 대표 작품·작가의 나열에 그쳤던 관행을 넘어 발굴 작품을 동원해 소설사의 편폭을 확장시키고 제종(諸種)을 가름하는 유형작업을 시도한 점은 주목할 만하다. 1960~1979년은 시원이 가장 활발하게 고전소설연구를 진행한 시기이다. 여전히 소설의 발굴과 해제를 지속하면서 존재가 드러나지 않았던 장서각(藏書閣) 소장 대하소설을 통독하고 해제함으로써 문화콘텐츠, 연구대상으로서의 가능성을 알렸다. 아울러 고전소설의 발생, 비교문학적 검토, 종교사상 등을 테마로 논문을 작성하는 한편 문고판 도서의 간행을 통해 고전소설에 대한 대중들의 관심을 진작시켜 나갔다. 1980~1985년은 시원이 연구, 발굴보다는 전집 간행을 통해 자료를 총집해 제공하는 데 각별한 관심을 기울인 때이다. 그가 간행한 거질의 소설, 야담의 자료집은 이후 소설뿐만 아니라 여타 고전서사에 대한 관심과 연구적 풍토를 조성하는 밑거름으로 작용하였다.
