시원은 25년간 5권의 저술을 통해 230여 편의 작품에 대한 연구 결과를 발표하였다. 본고에서는 시원의 한문소설 연구 성과를 검토하고 그 의의를 살펴보았다. 시원의 고전소설 연구는 대개 ‘서지-경개-개평’의 순으로 이루어졌으며, 특히 그는 고전소설 작품의 내용을 정확하게 전달하는 데 매우 큰 공을 기울였다. 한국 고전소설 기초 연구에 대한 그의 업적은 독보적이라 할 만하다. 그간 시원의 저서는 고전소설 연구의 ‘공구서’로 활용되어 왔는데, 한국 고전소설 연구서 가운데 이러한 지위를 얻은 개인 저술은 시원의 것이 유일하다. 이를 생각해 보면, 시원의 연구에 대한 몇몇 비판의 목소리들은 무색해지지 않을 수 없다.

Siwon(枾園) Kim ki-dong(1926~1986) published the results of his 25 years of research on about 230 literary works in his five writings. The present article reviewed his research results about Korean classical novel and suggested the significance thereof. Most of his studies on the Korean classical novels are consist of ‘bibliography-synopsis-assessment’ and above all, he devoted himself to convey the contents of the classical novels with accuracy. Such achievements in the basic study on Korean classical novels are something that could not be unrivaled. Thus, his writings have been used as ‘reference book’ for the research of Korean classical novels, and among those published, his book is the only one which obtains such a position as a individual writing. From this point of view, some criticisms on the study results of Siwon would be put to shame.
