이 논문은 시원 김기동 선생의 학문적 업적 중 한글소설 연구, 그 중에서도 특히 시원 선생이 매 저술마다 시도했던 유형 분류에 대해 살폈다. 시원 선생의 저작을 유형 분류의 의의의 측면에서 접근하면 크게 세 권의 저술에 주목해야 한다. 『한국고대소설개론』(1956), 『이조시대소설론』(1959), 『한국고전소설연구』(1981)가 그것인데, 이들 저술에서 펼친 유형론은 시간의 흐름에 따라 조금씩 변화를 하면서 선생이 유형론과 관련하여 중요하게 생각했던 바를 드러낸다. 그 특징은 크게 네 가지로 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 하위 장르 개념의 수정 및 소속 작품의 조정, 둘째, 새로운 하위 장르의 추가, 셋째와 넷째는 하위 장르의 재검토와 갱신이다. 대표적인 한글소설 유형들은 약간의 수정을 거치며 자리를 잡게 되고, 범주화가 명확하지 않았던 유형들은 몇 차례의 결합과 분리를 통해 오늘날 우리 학계에서 일반적으로 사용하고 있는 하위 장르의 토대가 되었다. 시원 선생은 학문적 황혼기에도 공부를 게을리하지 않고, 꾸준히 자신의 연구를 되돌아보고 교정하였다. 그리고 이를 통해 한국 고전소설 연구의 학문적 기반을 형성하였다. 한글소설에 대한 유형 분류는 그러한 연구 지향의 구체적 현현이라는 점에서 의의가 크다.

In this paper, I considered how Kim Ki-dong determined sub-genres of old novel written in Hangeul(Korean), in his old novel research works. When we approach his research about sub-genre, we can find three important works. These are An Introduction of Korean Old Novel(1956), The Theory of Old Novel in Joseon Dynasty(1959), The Research of Korean Old Novel(1981). These three works showed some change of his research about sub-genres of old novel. First, correction of sub-genres' concept and rearrange of works belonging to sub-genres. Second, adding new sub-genres, Third and Fourth, reexamination and renewal of sub-genres. His research made foundation of modern research environment of Korean old novel, especially research of sub-genres which represented academic advances. And he did not afraid of correction of his past research until he died. So he could found structure of research of Korean old novel. He is a history of research of Korean old novel.
