이 논문은 시원 김기동의 불교소설 연구 성과와 그 의미를 살핀 것이다. 먼저 시원 선생의 불교소설 연구 경향을 검토하고, 연구 성과와 과제, 그리고 연구사적 의미를 살펴보았다. 시원은 불교소설을 다양한 측면에서 연구하였다. 그중 대표적인 것이 자료·작품·사상 연구이다. 자료에서는 불교소설 작품을 소개하거나 간행한 것을 들 수 있고, 작품 연구는 고전소설 전반을 다루는 저작물을 통해 확인할 수 있다. 특히 불교소설만을 별도로 다룬 저서는 불교소설의 제반 사항을 알 수 있도록 하여 주목할 만하다. 사상 연구에서는 다양한 경전을 검토하면서 불교사상을 추출하고, 그것이 우리의 문학, 특히 고전소설에 어떻게 투영되었는지 고찰하였다. 시원은 방대한 고전소설을 탐독하면서 귀납적으로 얻은 결과물을 다양한 저서에 담아놓았다. 대부분 새로운 영역을 개척한 것이기에 큰 성과라 할 만하다. 자료·작품·사상에 두루 관심을 기울인 결과이다. 이제 자료 연구의 성과를 바탕으로는 더 확장된 텍스트를 강구해야 하겠거니와 작품 연구의 성과를 바탕으로는 불교소설을 더 유의미하게 검토해야 하겠다. 그리고 사상 연구의 성과를 토대로는 불교사상을 더 깊이 있게 검토해야 함은 물론, 사상적인 융화까지 짚어내야 하겠다. 시원은 고전소설을 종합적으로 연구하는 과정에서 불교소설도 의미 있게 다루었다. 불교소설을 모아 간행함으로써 감상과 연구의 텍스트로 활용할 수 있도록 하였음은 물론, 주요 작품을 분석적으로 고찰하여 불교소설의 특성이 부각되도록 하였다. 그런가 하면 불교소설의 사상적 배경을 심도 있게 살펴 불교소설의 의미를 헤아릴 수 있도록 했다. 이처럼 다양한 분야에서 성과를 드러냈기 때문에 불교소설에 대한 시원 선생의 업적을 평가할 수 있다.

This thesis studied about siwon Kim, Gi-dong's buddhist novels research result and its meaning. First it considered siwon's buddhist novels research tendency, and then research result and task, and history of research meaning. To sum up is as in the following. First, siwon's buddhist novels research tendency was examined. Siwon studied buddhist novels in various aspects. It is typical to data, works, and study of ideology. The data is remarkable for buddhist novels introduction and publication. The research of work can be confirmed on a work treating class novel. Especially the work that treated buddhist novels separately can explain its various matters. In studying of ideology, classic Buddhist ideology was extracted and how it is projected in our literature and classical novel is studied through various scripture examinations. Second, Siwon's buddhist novels research result and task were examined. Siwon pored over various classical novel, and its output is written in various works. His studying is very unique, and his work made stepping-stone for afterward. Due to his work, new direction of buddhist novels can be found. First, A extended discussion needs to be devised based on data research result. And then based on work research result, buddhist novels should be studied more actively. Finally, based on study of ideology, more extending study should be found. Third, it considered about siwon's buddhist novels research result and its meaning. Siwon treated buddhist novels meaningfully while studying classical novels synthetically. He gathered and published buddhist novels to use it for appreciation and studying text. He analytically considered major text, and gave prominence to buddhist novels characteristic. He also considered buddhist novels' ideological foundations in depth, and as a result buddhist novels' various meanings were revealed. Based on his research, study about buddhist novels can revitalize. So these are the reasons to evaluate siwon's research achievements highly.
