이 글은 시원(枾園) 김기동(金起東)의 고소설 연구의 지평을 확인하고, 향후 고전소설사의 방향을 모색한 것이다. 한국 고소설 연구사에서 시원은 엄연한 위치를 차지하고 있는 초기 연구자로, 고소설의 유형 분류와 그 체계화를 선도적으로 이끌었다. 그가 남긴 고소설 분야의 개론서와 연구 저작, 그리고 선집과 총집 사업은 가히 타의 추종을 불허한다. 이 점에서 그는 한국고전소설사 연구의 맥락에서 반드시 짚고 넘어가야 할 대상이다. 이 글에서는 그의 저작들을 망라하고, 고소설의 유형 분류와 그 체계화 과정을 구체적으로 따져보고자 했다. 그 자신 소설사를 지향하기 전에 개별 작품들에 대한 분류와 정리가 우선되어야 한다는 소명의식을 피력했던 바, 이를 횡적 연구의 차원에서 그 성과와 한계를 짚어 봤다. 결과적으로 그의 작업은 몇 가지 한계에도 불구하고 고소설 연구사에서는 반드시 거쳐야만 했던 과정을 혼자 감당한 성과였다. 이런 그의 성과는 이후 고소설의 새로운 지점들에 착목하는 계기를 마련해 주었다. 그 결과 현재 고소설 분야는 고전문학 연구 영역에서 확실한 위치를 차지하게 되었다. 아울러 그가 최종 목표로 삼았을 것으로 판단되는 새로운 고전소설사 집필은 현재 우리의 과제로 남게 되었다. 이에 필자는 명실공히 종횡의 고전소설사가 구현되어야 한다는 전제 아래, 그의 유형 분류를 토대로 영험서사, 원혼서사, 가족서사, 세태서사라는 네 가지 층위를 설정하고 그 가능성을 타진하였다.
The purpose of this study is to identify the prospect of Korean Classical Novels and to navigate its further path. In terms of Korean Classical Novel, Kim Ki-dong is one of the most renowned early researchers who led its categorization and organization. He had left a great deal of valuable books and collections as well. In this study, I have comprehensively collected all his works in order to examine the aspect of categorization and organization specifically. As his priority was not only to categorize pieces in the name of history of novels but to classify and sort each piece thoroughly, in the manner of horizontal research, I also tried to exam his works' achievements and limitations. I have come to a conclusion that although there were some flaws, he had been through the harsh path that the researchers of Korean Classical Novel must go through all on his own. The accomplishments have led us to observe especial points in Korean Classical Literature research. As a result, the research of Classical Novel has its own significant position in the whole Classical Literature field. Our remaining duty is to write the new History of Korean Classical Novels, which he had probably aimed for. I hereby set four categories - miraculous narration, revengeful ghost narration, family narration and narration of manners - based on his classification to determine the potentiality of writing the new history.
