이명(李溟)은 조선중기의 고위관료이며 유능한 호조판서로 알려진 인물이다. 유만주(兪晩柱)는 이 인물이 사적(私的) 공간인 집안에서 자기 소유의 노비에게 가혹한 법을 적용하고 함부로 그들을 살해한 이야기를 듣고 이를 자신의 일기 『흠영』(欽英)에 기록했다. 그에 따르면 이명은 가법(家法)이라는 명목으로 노비의 노동과 일상을 철저히 통제하고 그로부터 이탈하는 경우 가차 없이 살해하는 일그러진 심성의 소유자이자 잔혹한 가부장이다. 이명의 행적에 대한 주변 기록을 참조하건대 그의 악행이 최대치로 발현할 수 있었던 것은 선대(先代)로부터 부정하게 취득한 막대한 부와 그가 평생 주도면밀하게 추구하여 획득한 권력, 그리고 조선에 엄존하던 노비제도가 맞물린 결과라 할 수 있다. 이명은 부유한 권력자의 처지에 있었기에 국법을 벗어나 가부장의 권력을 천단할 수 있었던 것으로 보인다. 유만주는 이명의 어두운 이면을 기록하는 과정에서 피해자인 노비의 내면을 재현함으로써 인간악의 폐해를 가시화했다. 아울러 피해자에 대한 그의 공감적 시선은 그가 선취한 평등의 감수성을 반영하고 있다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다.

Yi Myeong is a senior official in the middle of the Joseon Dynasty and is known as a talented Treasury Secretary. Yu Manju wrote in his diary Heumyeong that this person applied a severe law to his own slave in a private space and murdered them. According to this record, Yi Myeong thoroughly controlled the labor and daily life of the slave in the name of the law. He is a brutal patriarch who is stunned enough to murder slaves if they break the law. He was wealthy and powerful, so he could ignore national law and enjoy the power of patriarch. Yu Manju accused the brutal act and intention of this relentless high official. Besides he sympathized with the victims' minds and carefully portrayed their psychological state, overwhelmed by fear. His story, as an unofficial version of historical tale, contains an important message about equality in 18th Joseon Dynasty.
