In the Pivotal Sentences and Serial-verb Sentences that use ‘有(you)’ as the first verb, there is a special linguistic phenomenon where the VP₂ phrase modifies the noun in front of it. The Pivotal Sentences are classified as a subtype of Serial-verb Sentences with a similar structure. However, the two structures differ in many ways. The Chinese verb ‘有(you)’ and the English verb ‘have’ maintain similar paths of development. ‘有(you)’ used in Pivotal Sentences and Serial-verb Sentences also is related to the English verb ‘have’. In the case of Pivotal Sentences, ‘有(you)’ is accompanied by a human noun, which corresponds to a structure where the relative pronoun clause modifies the antecedents in English. In contrast, the Serial-verb Sentences in which ‘有(you)’ makes a case for an un-occurring action accompanied by abstract nouns is quite similar to the structure in which the “to”-infinitive directs the antecedents in English.
