이 연구의 목적은 한국어 분류사의 의미 양상을 인지적인 관점에서 고찰하고 범주화 양상을 분석하는 것이다. 이를 위해 표준국어대사전(1999)와 선행연구를 바탕으로 한국어 분류사 목록 324개를 설정하였다. 인간은 익숙한 개념으로써 낯선 개념을 이해하려는 특성으로 실제 의미를 갖던 어휘로부터 새로운 분류사가 만들어지는 과정을 은유와 환유의 이론으로 살펴보았다. 분류사의 범주화는 분류사가 갖는 수적의미를 바탕으로 [개체], [부분], [집합], [종류]로 1차 범주화를 하였으며 [유정성], [무정성], 사물의 물리적 속성과, 기능적 속성 등에 따라 2차 범주화를 하였다. 범주화를 통해 일부 명사에서 문법화가 이루어지는 양상을 확인할 수 있었다. 이러한 문법화 현상이 나타나는 이유는 지시물과 대상명사지시물 간의 인접성이나 유사성 관계에 기초하여 은유나 환유의 인지기제를 적극적으로 사용한 결과 때문이다.

This research aims to analyze how the Korean classifiers’ meanings are derived through the cognitive and categorization processes. For this, a list of Korean classifiers is provided. The human tendency to understand new concepts based on the familiar concepts has led to a linguistic process wherein new classifiers are created from their origin words. This process has been studied from the theoretical perspective of metaphor and metonymy. Classifiers are selected and categorized into a list. As it appears not all nouns were grammaticalized as classifiers in this process; only nouns with specific semantic properties were grammaticalized. [human] nouns were grammaticalized upside down; the higher category words were grammaticalized into the lower categories. In the [animal] and [plant] classifiers, a part of the animal or plant corresponded to the object- their grammaticalization process was in part-whole order. The [unit] words were grammaticalized into classifiers.
