본고는 서광범과 Eli Barr Landis의 英譯 설화를 소개했다. 이 자료는 학계에 처음 소개된다. 서광범(1859~1897)은 네 편의 英譯 설화를 The Path에 싣는다. 타국에서 망명의 삶을 비참하게 견뎌내야 하는 상황 안에서 삶을 유지할 수 있게 도움을 주는 단체의 종교적 목적에 부합하는 설화를 선택하고 그것을 영어로 옮긴 것이다. 그러나 또한 이러한 설화에 투영된 서광범의 의지도 엿볼 수 있다. 설화 속 깨달음을 얻으려는 구도자의 심정으로 망명의 삶을 견뎌내고 있다는 의지를 표현한 것일 수도 있다. Eli Barr Landis(1865~1898)는 영국 성공회 소속 미국인 의료 선교사였다. 그는 선교 활동을 하면서 자신이 돌보던 고아들로부터 한국의 설화를 채록했다. Eli Barr Landis는 America Folk-lore 誌에 네 편의 설화를 수록했다. Eli Barr Landis가 英譯한 이야기들은 모두 행복한 결말로 귀결된다. Eli Barr Landis는 이야기를 풀어나가는 과정에서 상황에 대한 상세한 설명이 필요하다고 느낀 부분에 대해서 친절하게 주를 달아놓은 것처럼 서술했다. 이들은 미국에서 촉발된 한국 ‘놀이’에 대한 민속학적 조사의 조력자로 활약했다. 서광범은 미국에서 타 지역에 대한 관심이 발생하기 시작한 시대적 흐름에 맞추어 자신이 가지고 있던 자산을 함께 공유했다. Landis도 마찬가지이다. 조선에서 생활했던 짧은 기간 동안 조선에 대한 애정과 헌실 속에서 자신이 겪고 공부했던 조선의 상황을 본국인 미국의 학자들과 공유했던 것이다. 개화기 한국의 상황을 공유했을 서구 지식인과의 교유 상황을 찾아 서구의 한국 인식 과정에 대한 연구 필요성을 다시금 깨닫게 한다.

This article introduced the English tales of Seo Kwang-bum(1859-1897) and Eli Barr Landis(1865-1898). The tales written by the two are first introduced to academia. Seo Kwang-bum puts four Koran tales in English on The Path. He chose narratives that fit the religious purpose of an organization that helps them to live in a situation where they have to endure misery of exile in another country and translated it into English. However, we can also see the intention of Seo Kwang-bum who is reflected in these stories. It may be the expression of a willingness to endure the life of asylum with the investigator's heart to gain enlightenment in the narrative. Eli Barr Landis was an American medical missionary to the Anglican Church. In his missionary work, he collected Korean tales from the orphans he cared for. Eli Barr Landis has written four stories in the America Folk-lore. All the stories of Eli Barr Landis come to a happy ending. Eli Barr Landis wrote as if he had kindly commented on the parts of the story that he felt necessary to elaborate on the situation. They served as an assistant, triggered in the United States. We can see that Seo Kwang-beom shared his assets with the trend of the time when interest in other regions began to occur in the United States. The same applies to Landis. During the short period of time he lived in Choseon, he shared the situation of Choseon he had experienced and studied with his native American scholars. During the the time of enlightenment, we find out the situation of sharing with Western intellectuals who would have shared the situation of Korea.
