이 연구에서는 미국 LRA에서 주최하는 최근 3년(2016 - 2018)간의 학술대회에서 발표된 연구 제목들의 키워드 기반 내용 분석을 통해 문식성 연구의 국제적 동향을 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 다음과 같은 결론을 얻을 수 있었다. 첫째, 최근의 LRA 학술대회는 비판적 문식성을 매우 강조했다. 비판적 문식성에 기반한 다양한 접근법들을 토대로 흑인이나 다중언어 화자, 소외된 학생들의 문식활동에 대한 연구들을 중요시하고 있었다. 둘째, 읽기 연구보다는 쓰기 연구들에 더 관심을 가졌다. 예비교사 및 현직교사에 대한 쓰기 교육, 학교 현장에서의 쓰기 교수와 학습 실태, 학생들의 학교 안팎에서의 글쓰기에도 많은 관심을 기울이고 있었다. 셋째, 문식 행위가 어떻게 공동체의 번영과 사회 변환을 장려하면서도 서로 다른 언어와 문화를 가진 다양한 인종, 성별, 민족들 사이의 갈등을 해결할 수 있을지에 관심을 가졌다. 마지막으로, 본 연구의 결과가 국어교육에 주는 시사점을 비판적 문식성, 다양성, 쓰기 교육의 세 가지 측면에서 논의하였다.
This study aimed to identify international trends in literacy research by conducting a keyword-based content analysis of research titles that were presented at the annual conferences of the Literacy Research Association (LRA) during the last three years (2016-2018). The findings are as follow. First, it was found that recent LRA conferences heavily emphasized critical literacy. They mainly focused on studies of the literacy practices of black people, multilingual speakers, and marginalized students using a variety of critical literacy approaches. Second, the conferences covered more writing research than reading research. For example, a great deal of attention was given to writing education for preservice and in-service teachers, teaching and learning writing in K-12 contexts, and students’ writing practices in- and out-of-school. Finally, recent LRA conferences highlighted how literacy could resolve conflicts between various racial, gender, and ethnic groups with different languages and cultures while promoting the prosperity of the community and social transformation. The findings of this study have important implications for literacy research in Korea. First, it is necessary to shift the focus of literacy research and education in Korea from functional literacy to critical literacy. Second, researchers need to focus on diversity issues as well as excellence related to literacy education in Korea. Last but not least, educators, researchers, and policy makers should make every endeavor to promote writing education.
