이 논문은 한국의 다문화주의에 관한 공적인 페다고지로서 영화라는 매체의 가능성에 대한 연구이다. Henry Giroux는 공적인 페다고지로서 영화라는 매체가 현실을 영화적으로 재현하고 문화의 구성에 영향을 미칠 뿐만 아니라, 더 나아가 대중들의 상상력과 공적인 의식의 형성에 영향을 미친다고 논한다. 그는 특히 대중적인 주류 영화들이 이러한 역할을 하는 것에 주목하는데, 그 이유는 이러한 영화들의 엔터테인먼트적인 요소로 인해 대중들이 보다 쉽게 그것에 접근할 수 있기 때문이라는 것이다. 그래서 그는 대중적인 주류 영화들이 종종 기록영화 못지않게 공적인 페다고지로서의 역할을 효과적으로 수행할 수 있다고 논한다. 이 논문에서는 이러한 공적인 페다고지로서의 영화에 대한 Giroux의 논지를 전유하여 〈방가?방가!〉라는 영화의 분석에 적용한다. 이 영화를 선택한 이유는 한국의 다문화주의와 관련한 중요한 주제들을 재미있게 잘 다루고 있고 상영 당시 이 영화에 대한 대중들의 반응들도 상당히 괜찮았기 때문이다. 무엇보다 이 영화는 한국의 다문화주의와 관련한 이 논문의 핵심 주제인 ‘마이너 트랜스내셔널리즘’과 ‘소수자 공간정치’에 대해서 살펴볼 수 있는 좋은 작품이기 때문이다. 이 연구를 통해 필자는 마이너 트랜스내셔널리즘이 한국의 다문화주의 현실에 대한 비판적 시각을 제시할 수 있는 담론적 개념으로서, 좀 더 구체적으로 미시적인 차원에서 소수자들의 실천적 연대 형성이 어떻게 이루어지는지를 이해하기 위한 비평적 틀로서 상당히 유용할 수 있음을 제안하고자 한다.

This paper examines the possibility of film as public pedagogy on multiculturalism in Korea. Henry Giroux argues that not only does film as public pedagogy represent social reality and influence the formation of culture, but it also influences how people form their imagination and public consciousness. He draws our attention to the ways in which popular mainstream films play such a role due to their easy accessibility to the public. Hence, he suggests that popular mainstream films can effectively play the role of public pedagogy, often as effectively as documentary films. This paper appropriates Giroux’s ideas on film as public pedagogy and analyzes Banga?Banga!. I choose this film because it deals entertainingly with some important issues on multiculturalism in Korea and was widely accepted by the public at that time when it was first screened. Moreover, the film serves as a good case study through which for me to consider ‘minor transnationalism’ and a ‘spatial politics of minority’ in Korea, the two main topics of the paper. I suggest minor transnationalism as a discursive concept that can enable us to have a critical perspective on multicultural situations in Korea, and more specifically, as a critical frame that can help us to better understand how minor activist solidarity is formed on a microscopic level.
