본 논문에서는 한국에서 독일로 1차 이주를 떠났다가 차후 미국으로 재이주한 전직 파독광부들의 초국적 이동에 주목하여 이들의 사회경제적 정착과정과 재미한인공동체 형성과 발전에 있어서의 역할과 기여에 관해서 고찰하였다. 이전 경유지인 독일에서의 노동경험과 연결망을 바탕으로 조직된 파독광부 모임인 ‘동우회’의 결성과 활동에 관해서도 살펴보았다. 연구방법으로는 시카고와 로스앤젤레스를 중심으로 32명의 파독광부출신 재미한인들을 대상으로 심층면담을 실시하였다. 미국으로 재이주한 후에 파독광부들은 1970년대 접어들어서는 개인사업을 통해 축적한 경제력과 동우회의 조직력을 바탕으로 한인커뮤니티를 주도적으로 이끌어 나갔다. 이민 초기 여러 한인단체를 새로이 조직하거나 핵심구성원으로서 한인커뮤니티 활동에 적극적으로 참여하였다. 파독광부들에 의해 세워진 한인식품점과 같은 초기 사업체는 코리아타운 상권형성의 초석이 되었으며 지리적뿐 아니라 사회적인 거점 역할을 하였고 인접지역으로 다른 한인업체의 유입을 가속화시켰다. 이들의 경제적 활동범위는 한인타운에만 국한되지 않고 소수민족, 다민족을 대상으로 다양한 업종의 사업에도 종사하였다. 또한 두 도시에서의 공간적 특징이 파독광부의 경제적 적응과 사업 규모 그리고 동우회 모임의 지속에 영향을 미쳤다. 파독광부들이 직접적으로 재미한인사회에 기여한 바도 크지만 후속이민의 기반을 마련함으로써 한인공동체의 형성과 확장에 중요한 역할을 담당하였다. 본 논문은 파독광부의 글로벌 이주사의 재조명을 통해 재외한인 이주와 정착에 대한 다각적이고 심층적인 이해에 기여할 수 있을 것이다.
Focusing on Korean immigrants who were initially dispatched to Germany as coal mining workers in the 1960s and 1970s and later relocated to the U.S., this article explores their socioeconomic adaptation processes as well as their contributions to the formation and development of Korean communities in the U.S. The study also examines the motives behind the establishment and activities of the ex-miners’ association, Dongwoo Association, in Chicago and Los Angeles. Methodologically, this research utilized empirical data from in-depth interviews with 32 Korean ex-miners currently residing in the Chicago and Los Angeles areas. The former miners made a significant contributions to Korean ethnic economy and community politics based on their entrepreneurial successes and through Dongwoo Associations. A few of the first Korean grocery stores and restaurants in these two American cities were founded by ex-miners and paved the way for the building Koreatowns, attracting other Korean businesses to neighboring areas. Moreover, beyond the geographical boundaries of Koreatowns, Korean ex-miners were involved in various kinds of businesses catering to multiethnic customers. Unique characteristics of urban spaces in these two cities have somewhat differently influenced ex-miners’ economic adaptation processes and the frequencies and continuations of their social gatherings. Ex-miners have been actively involved in Korean community activities and organizations as founders or leaders and have served important roles triggering chain migrations from South Korea. By shedding light on understudied experiences of ex-miners’ global migration, this study will contribute to the better understanding of migration and adaptation processes of these members of the Korean diaspora.
