현재 프랑스뿐만 아니라 유럽을 비롯한 세계 각국에서 각광받고 있는 플로리앙 젤레르는 우리의 삶, 부모, 부부, 자녀 등을 소재로 타자와 함께 살아가는 어려움을 연극으로 표현하는 신진작가이다. 2004년 젤레르가 발표한 첫 극작품인 『타자』는 공간이나 시간이 제시되지 않은 무대에서, ‘그’, ‘그녀’, ‘타자’로 지칭되는 세 명의 등장인물들이 이끌어가는 촌극이다. 총 9장으로 구성된 이 연극에서 ‘그’를 제외하고 ‘그녀’와 ‘타자’는 한 명의 동일한 인물로 보기 어렵고 그 정체를 명확히 규명하기 어렵다. 바로 이러한 모호함 때문에 이 연극은 꿈의 한 장면으로 연출할 수 있는 가능성도 열려있다. 그러나 동시에 ‘타자’라는 철학적 개념에 기반한다면, 젤레르의 연극적 세계를 새롭고 폭넓게 해석할 수 있다. 이런 관점에서 이 연구는 타자를 제3의 인물, 나를 바라보는 자기의 시선, 망상, 고독, 질투, 죽음의 층위에서 접근하고, 이로써 작가의 세상에 대한 비전과 삶에 대한 인식을 고찰했다.

Florian Zeller, who is currently in the limelight not only in France but also Europe and the rest of the world, is an up-and-coming new writer who expresses through his plays the hardships of living with an ‘the Other’ in such themes as our life, our parents, married couples, children, etc. In 2004, Zeller released his first theatrical play titled “THE OTHER”, which is a short play led by 3 characters who are simply referred to as ‘He’, ‘She’, and ‘the Other’ on a stage without any specific setting. In the nine-chapter play, it is difficult to see ‘She’, and ‘the Other’ as one and the same character, and it is equally difficult to precisely determine their identity. Such ambiguity in the play leaves open the possibility of it being presented as a scene from a dream. However, it is also possible to interpret Zeller’s theatrical world in a new and broad way, if one bases it on the philosophical concept of ‘the Other’. From such a viewpoint this study attempts to approach the ‘the Other’ as a third-party character, one’s view of himself, delusions, solitude, envy and death, and examines the author’s vision of the world and perception of life.
