프랑스 작가 피에르 퀴쟁(Pierre Cuisin)은 1806년에 『러브레이스의 사생아와 메르퇴유 후작부인의 서녀(庶女), 혹은 설욕(雪辱)한 풍속』을 출간한다. 책의 제목은 프랑스 문학에 많은 영향을 준 리차드슨(Richardson)의 『클라리스 할로우』의 남자 주인공 러브레이스와, 당대에 많은 성공을 거두고, 여러 모방 작품들을 낳았던 라클로(Laclos)의 『위험한 관계』 여주인공 메르퇴유 부인을 환기시킨다. 앞서 성공한 작품에 기대어 새로운 흥행을 기대하며, 유사한 작품을 만드는 당대의 문학적 풍토로 보았을 때, 퀴쟁의 시도는 놀라운 것이 아니었다. 그러나 퀴쟁의 경우는 우선 19세기 초반 작품이기에 18세기 문학 경향을 보여주는 마지막 세대의 작품이라는 점, 에둘러 표현하지 않고 제목과 내용에서 대담하고 직접적으로 모방하는 작품들과 작가들에 대해 언급한다는 점, 그리고 라클로 뿐 아니라 영국 작가 리차드슨의 작품도 함께 모방하는 점에서 우리의 관심을 끈다. 우리는 두 작품의 ‘혼성 모방’을 표방하고 있는 퀴쟁 작가의 모방 방식, 그가 답습하고 있는 두 작품의 당대문학적 관례들에 대해 중점적으로 살펴보고, 그가 작품에서 새로운 시대적 상황을 반영했는지에 대해 탐색하고자 하였다. 우선 퀴쟁의 작품이 어떻게 형식과 문체적 측면에서 라클로와 리차드슨의 작품을 답습했는지 알아보았고, 다음으로 두 작품의 등장인물들이나 내용적 측면에서 어떤 차용이 있었는지를 알아보았다. 마지막으로, 우리는 퀴쟁이 어떤 문맥에서 라클로와 리차드슨의 이름과 그들 작품의 등장인물들을 직접적으로 언급하는지에 대해 살펴보았다. 이 연구를 통하여 우리는 퀴쟁의 소설이 18세기 서간체 소설과 리베르티나주 소설의 문학적 관례들을 방대하게 담아낸 거의 ‘마지막’ 작품이며, 앞서 성공한 문학가 선배들의 기술을 답습하게 되는 후대 문학가들의 ‘숙명’을 보여주는 한편, 자신의 시대에 맞추어 새로운 시각을 보여주고 있다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

In 1806 French novelist Pierre Cuisin published Le Batard de Lovelace et la fille de la Marquise de Merteuil or Les Moeurs Vengees. Suggesting this novel features characters related to Richardson and Laclos’ heroes, the title is indicative of the will of the author to capitalize on the significant success of their novels that were subject to many imitations. Nowadays largely forgotten, Cuisin’s hybrid novel attracted our intention because of its manner to combine the two famous works and we also wanted to know if the author produced more than a mere imitation. So we first looked at how Pierre Cuisin takes the form and styles found in Laclos and Richardson’s works. Then, as a comparison, we examined closely other examples of imitations, remakes, modifications of the characters and stories of these two novels. Lastly, we tried to spot in Cuisin’s novel references and expressions reminding directly of Laclos, Richardson and their works. Through this study we noticed the novel of Cuisin highlights the fact authors are dependent on literary tradition but yet able to take profit of form, style and the most characteristic features of the previous works to open new perspectives adapted to their time.
