This study compares the intrahistory of Miguel de Unamuno, a distinguished member of the Spanish Generation of ‘98, with the concept of ‘history’ in the Theory of the National Spirit of Park Eun-sik, a Korean historian and independence activist. The historical similarities existing between the two countries at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries make this comparison possible. Both countries experienced serious political and social crises at that time. Spain, which was considered to have taken its own path apart from the rest of Europe since the 17th century, suffered a national crisis due to its waning national power by the end of the 19th century. Korea as well had been unable to adapt to the changes which were taking place in international scene since the end of the 19th century and sunk into a deep crisis which turned it into a Japanese colony. In the face of this situation, we can see that there is a similar epistemological correlation between Unamuno and Park Eun-sik in dealing with the national crises and they do so by articulating the concepts of intrahistory and history of the national spirit respectively so that their countries identities are threatened by those crises.
The target of this research is to understand the full meaning of both concepts and also the contexts they sprung from, while focusing on the similarities existing between them. In addition, we explore the differences that occurred when these two thinkers linked these concepts to the realities of the times.
