다문화주의는 민주주의의 다양한 유형에 따라 그 내용과 특징이 달라진다. 다문화주의를 잘 실현하기 위해서는 좋은 정책과 좋은 이데올로기도 중요하지만 좋은 민주주의도 필요하다. 그런데 기존의 다문화주의 연구는 특정 국가의 다문화주의 내용과 특징과 한계가 그 나라 민주주의의 유형과 상당히 밀접한 관계가 있다는 점을 간과해온 문제점이 있다. 이 글은 기존연구의 이러한 한계를 극복하기 위해서 다양한 민주주의 유형과 다문화주의 간의 관계를 이론적으로 탐구한다. 이 글은 대의민주주의와 직접민주주의, 자유민주주의, 사회민주주의, 합의민주주의, 공화민주주의, 심의민주주의, 참여민주주의 등이 다문화주의와 어떤 관계를 지니는지를 검토한다. 구체적으로 이 글은 다양한 민주주의 유형이 자유와 평등 그리고 주권이론을 바라보는 시각의 유사점과 차이점을 포착하여 민주주의와 다문화주의의 관계를 탐구한다.

Multiculturalism differs in content and character from various types of democracy. Good policy and good ideology are important for good multiculturalism, but good democracy is also needed. However, the existing multiculturalism research has overlooked the fact that the content, characteristics and limitations of a particular country’s multiculturalism are closely related to the types of democracy in that country. This paper theoretically explores the relationship between various democracy types and multiculturalism to overcome these limitations of existing research. This paper examines the relationship between multiculturalism and various types of democracies such as representative democracy, direct democracy, liberal democracy, social democracy, consensus democracy, republican democracy, deliberative democracy, participatory democracy. Specifically, this paper explores the relationship between democracy and multiculturalism by capturing the similarities and differences between different types of democracy in their view of the theory of freedom, equality, and sovereignty.
