노년에 대한 막연한 기대나 노인에 대한 사회의 고정관념은 노년기에 접어든 개인에게 정체성의 위기를 불러일으킨다. 노인은 특정한 시기적 범주의 개인이 아니며, 지속적인 시간과 삶의 연장 속에서 구성되는 자아의 새로운 양상이다. 따라서 노년기에는 정체성의 재구성이 이루어지며, 노년의 자아 정체감을 안정적으로 획득하게 되는 것을 입사의 한 과정으로 볼 수 있다. 한국문학사의 대표적 노년소설 작가인 박완서의 「저물녘의 황홀」, 「석양에 등을 지고 그림자를 밟다」는 바로 노년기 입사 체험의 양식을 서사의 구성 방식으로 드러내고 있다. 자아와의 불화(不和), 체험적 회고, 노년의 수용으로 이루어지는 소설의 서사구조는 곧 노년기에 접어든 개인의 정체성 회복, 또는 정체성 재구성의 방식을 보여준다. 노년 입사소설은 삶의 구체적 현장에서 구성해낸 노년의 삶과 정서들을 재현함으로써 노년기 역할변화에 적응하고 새로운 역할을 미리 준비하는 ‘예기적 사회화(anticipatory socialization)’를 통해 노년기의 불안과 무규범의 혼란에서 벗어나게 하고 궁극적으로 노인층의 자기 존중감 및 사회정체감 향상에 기여할 수 있다.

A vague expectation in old age or social stereotype toward the elderly brings about an identity crisis for individuals entering old age. Old men are not the individuals who belong to a category of a particular period. They are a new aspect of ego, formed as the time continues and life extends. Thus, rebuilding one’s identity and stably gaining self-identity in old age can be viewed as patterns of the initiation. The Trance of Falling Sun and Stepping on the Shadow with a Sunset on the Back of Park Wan Seo - a representative writer for stories of old age in Korean literature history - depict experiences of entering old age and reveal the initiation pattern in a narrative form. The narrative structure of the novels composes self-discord, remembrance, and acceptance of old age; matching with the way of an individual reaching old age, recovering self-identity or rebuilding the identity. An initiation story of old age recreates the elderly’s life and emotion that emerged from a detailed scene of life. Through anticipatory socialization that prepares the elderly to establish a new role and get used to the changes, the story can help the elderly to break out of anxiety and chaos of normlessness in old age and ultimately contribute in the improvement of their self-respect and social identity.
