2019년 베트남의 GDP 성장률은 7.02%를 기록했고, 1인당 GDP는 2,800 달러로 증가했다. 무역량과 흑자액은 역대 최고였고 외국인 투자는 지난 10년 간 최고치를 기록했다. 이러한 성과와 함께 2019년 베트남 경제는 국내 부문이 내실을 다져가기 시작했다는 점에서 고무적이라고 평가할 수 있다. 국내 및 FDI 부문 간 수출 비중의 차이는 여전히 크지만, 국내 기업군의 수출 증가율이 FDI 기업군에 비해 높은 것으로 나타났기 때문이다. 하지만, 국영기업개혁, 소재ㆍ부품산업 개발과 글로벌 가치사슬에서 경쟁력을 갖춘 제품 생산, 그리고 수출 시장의 다변화 등은 여전히 중요한 과제이다. 정치적으로는 그간 실효성 있게 수행되지 못했던 반부패운동과 숙정작업이 전방위적으로 전개되었다. 개혁과정에서 연이어 발생하고 있는 금융 및 토지 관련 부패에 연루된 정치국 위원, 전․현직 주요 부처 장관과 차관, 지방정부 부패사건 관련자들에 대한 징계조치가 내려졌다. 정치국 위원에게 징계조치를 내린 것은 공산당 역사상 획기적 사건이다. 응우옌푸쫑 총비서는 공산당 통치를 지속하는 데 궁극적 목표를 두고 있기 때문에 부패를 사회주의체제의 근간을 위협하는 요소로 인식하고 있다. 따라서 반부패운동의 전례 없는 폭과 깊이는 공산당의 부패 척결에 대한 단호한 의지를 보여준다. 대외적으로는 베트남이 2019년 초 북한-미국 정상회담을 유치하여 평화국가로서의 이미지를 세계에 표방하였으나, 회담이 결렬됨에 따라 제한적 성과만을 얻을 수 있었다. 바로 이어 북한과 베트남은 양국 간 정상회담을 갖고 관계를 심화하였다.

The country has achieved the highest trade volume and surplus and the foreign direct investment(FDI) marked a 10-year high. Export growth rate of the domestic sector is higher than that of the FDI sector. It can be understood that the Vietnamese economy is overcoming internal weaknesses. The Vietnamese leadership raised expectations for sustainable economic growth. To this end, it is necessary to accelerate SOE reform, attract substantial FDI, produce competitive products in the global value chain, and diversify export markets. Politically, Anti-corruption campaigns and clean-up works from within launched by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong have been implemented in all directions. Disciplinary action was taken against former and current major ministers and vice ministers and local government officials related to financial and land corruption issues in the reform process. In particular, This marked an important milestone in the history of the Communist Party of Vietnam(CPV) that the Politburo and CPV have decided to take disciplinary action against high-ranking officials. Nguyen Phu Trong recognizes corruption as a threat to the foundation of the socialist system. The unprecedented breadth and depth of the anti-corruption campaign demonstrates the CPV’s commitment to fight against corruption. Externally, Vietnam attracted the North Korea-US summit in early 2019 and expressed its image as a peaceful nation to the world, but only with limited results as the meeting broke down. Soon after, North Korea and Vietnam held a summit and deepened their relations.
